1

We will gather for our tour across the street from the Merchant Hotel Building. After getting acquainted with each other, we will take time to discuss the history of Japanese immigration to Oregon, the Nihonmachi (Japantown) that once existed in the area, and how the Japanese-owned businesses located within the hotel made it an important gathering place for the community.

Japanese American Historical Plaza

We will spend a substantial part of our tour at Japanese American Historical plaza. Your guide will first share about the history and significance of the space, then lead the group through reading and interpreting the stones on the east side of the plaza. As we explore, you’ll gain more insight into the lives of Japanese Americans in the region before 1941, their forced removal to incarceration camps during World War II, and the resilience they showed in rebuilding their lives afterward and advocating for justice with the Redress Movement in the 1970s and 1980s. Guests are invited to share how the experience of Japanese Americans stirs up reflections related to their own heritage and identity.

I did this tour with my mom and a friend and we all learned a lot about Japanese American history in Portland. Connor has clearly spent a lot of time researching the history of Nihonmachi (Japantown) and the role Japanese Americans spent shaping Portland's downtown through the 20th century. This is a great tour for: - Portlanders interested in local history - Visitors interested in learning something beyond the cheesy ghost tours - Anyone who wants to learn more about the Japanese American experience in the US

  • Great tour and history of Japantown and Japanese American Historical Plaza.

Connor’s tour offered fascinating insights into Portland’s history and the history of Japanese Americans in Portland including the history of their immigration to the US. In addition to visiting the area where Japantown was located and discussing the types of businesses immigrants established, the tour included a visit to the Japanese American Historical Plaza. As we looked at the monuments and inscriptions, Connor encouraged the participants to imagine the lives of those who were sent to incarceration camps in WW II. We also discussed the contributions of Bill Naito, a Japanese American businessman who offered great leadership in developing the Historical Plaza. I’d recommend the tour to anyone interested in Portland’s history or the history of the injustice of the mass incarceration of West Coast Japanese Americans.

Conner gave us a fabulous tour beginning with a cup of tea. His knowledge of local Japanese American history is exemplary. By asking us "what came up for you " allowed us ask questions and share personal experiences which enriched the community connections that we unknowingly share with each other.

  • Japanese American history in the Portland area.

Even though the day was mostly grey skies and cool, Connor's tour was stimulating. His insights into Bill Naito and Bill's love of Portland and dedication to the Japanese American community were enlightening. I would have never known to stop and read the inscriptions written on the individual boulders and 2 large engraved pillars in the Japanese Memorial Park along the Willamette Riverfront. If you are Japanese or have an interest in the Japanese American history in the Portland area, you will learn a lot. It is well worth your time.

  • A meaningful and informative exploration into the complex history of the connection between Japan and Portland.

Connor was an exceptional tour guide - the day of our tour it was quite warm - near triple digits - but Connor brought iced tea and mugs for people to sip while on the tour, making sure we were hydrated and comfortable in the shade when possible. Our group was smaller than expected, so the experience was all the more informative and intimate, allowing for a more open discussion of emotions, ideas and reactions to each part of the tour - which included visiting art and sculpture, architecture, and landscape. Connor made the environment feel inclusive and friendly, asking for participation from each of us in subtle ways, which helped with the sense of immersion into a significant moment in our city's (and nation's) history. I came away feeling more connected to the past, and with a better understanding of how much early Japanese immigrants went through in making a home of the US and Portland. Having these physical reminders of said history made for more impact than I anticipated - I was humbled.

The entire tour was engaging and intriguing. It was a short stroll packed with a history from the first Japanese immigrants to Portland until today. I can't recommend it enough to other Portland-Based Japaneses Businesses looking to have their staff learn more about the rich and complicated history of Japanese People in Portland. The most amazing part is the way the tour brings out a history that thousands walk by every day without realizing its right there!

This tour was both moving and incredibly informative. I’ve walked through this part of Portland countless times without ever realizing the rich history beneath the surface. Connor’s passion for Japanese American history shines through in his thoughtful storytelling and the connections he draws between the experiences of Japanese Portlanders and our own lives today. Whether you’re visiting the city for the first time or a local looking for a fresh perspective, I highly recommend this tour. It’s timely, impactful, and has stayed with me long after the experience.

  • An essential tour for both visitors and residents of Portland.

I cannot recommend this tour enough for someone visiting Portland looking for a way to connect with the local history, or a long time resident looking to form a deeper bond and appreciation for the place they call home. I have lived in Portland for over 12 years and frequently run and walk through the north Naito waterfront area. I had no idea the rich history, struggle, sacrifice, and importance of the plaza surrounding the iconic Japanese cherry blossom trees. This tour had a lasting impact on me and I will never visit and view the area in the same way. Not only does Connor do such an incredible job sharing the deep history of the Japanese community in Portland, but he also allows guests to connect with each space giving them the opportunity to make their own observations about what they are seeing. It makes for a much more engaging tour and creates an accessible experience for everyone. Thanks Connor!
