Ngāti Whakaue is a sub-tribe of the Te Arawa waka (canoe) which journeyed from the Pacific homeland of Hawaiiki to New Zealand around 1350AD. Visitors, including royalty, arrived at this bustling settlement before going on to visit the Pink and White Terraces at Lake Tarawera, and to experience the healing waters of Rotorua. Today, Ohinemutu is the setting for many significant occasions for the people of Rotorua. It an area of spiritual, historic and cultural importance. You will be guided by a Ngāti Whakaue descendent or family member and learn about a distinctive way of life, see the natural cooking pools and bathing areas, admire the paramount traditional meeting house and St Faith’s Anglican church.

BOOK THIS EXCURSION!!! this was by far the best off ship excursion I have ever done. I cruise a lot. The instructions were very easy. Carleen and Danny were amazing. The tour group was small. It was easy to find getting off the ship and we were dropped right back at the port. I can’t say enough about this day. It was by far my favorite of all the many cruises and hundreds of excursions I’ve done. Wai Akiri was also by far the best pamper me, spa day I have ever experienced in my entire life. And I do a lot of spa days. I cannot say enough about this day, this company and the excursion. I cannot wait to come back to New Zealand and book with the same company and bring friends. I did it solo and it was simply perfect.

We took the tour from a cruise ship from Tauranga. We were picked up and taken to Rotorua (about 1 hour by car) and had a wonderful day visiting a Maori area and then on to Wai Ariki spa which was a great experience taking the Restorative Journey - geothermal pools, Manuka honey showers, different sauna choices, mud bath and steam rooms. Wonderful!. We were given plenty of information on the way to and from Rotorua - stopped off to see some Kiwi fruit on the vines and heard about Maori culture and highlights of the area. It was a great day.
