Rise above the ordinary and explore Indonesia's most magnificent Hindu temple complex on this half-day private tour dedicated to Prambanan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site east of Yogyakarta. Built in the 9th century, this remarkable complex rivals Borobudur in grandeur and cultural significance.

Note: Prambanan is closed on Mondays and Nyepi Day.

Travel from your Yogyakarta hotel through Central Java's countryside. Your guide provides historical context about the Hindu kingdoms and explains the significance of this sacred site, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia with over 240 structures and spires reaching 47 meters.

Explore the central sanctuary featuring three towering temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Marvel at exquisite stone reliefs depicting the Ramayana epic as your guide brings these mythological tales to life.

Venture beyond to explore Plaosan temples and Sewu complex, revealing the peaceful coexistence of Hindu and Buddhist traditions in ancient Java.

Prambanan Temples

The morning starts with meeting your English-speaking guide at the lobby of your downtown Yogyakarta hotel. Together with a dedicated driver, the journey from Yogya to the realms of the Prambanan, an 8th-century Hindu temple complex which also is known locally as the complex of Lorojongrang, will take approximately 45 minutes in an eastern direction. The 20-kilometre long drive delivers ample views on local life, significant to Java. Heralded as the world’s largest Hindu temple, and now under the protection of UNESCO since 1991, the whole Prambanan is said to include over 200 separate temples structures of which many still remain visible. After its rediscovery, the temple remains an important place for Hindu festivals and events for the Indonesian population.

Upon arrival, follow your guide to admire the exquisite carvings that have withstood the test of time. Large parts of these stone carvings tell the story of the Ramayana, a story filled with symbolism. Throughout the exploration of these sacred grounds with over 240 recorded temples and buildings (the highest point is 47 metres above ground level), the guide will go in-depth about the connection between the Prambanan and its surrounding temples, both with a Hindu and Buddhist origin. There will be enough time to stroll around and admire the beautiful carvings and the neighbouring shrines such as the Candi Plaosan and the Candi Sewu. After the last snapshots, it is time to head back to your air-conditioned vehicle and for a leisurely drive back to Yogyakarta. Depending on traffic conditions, you will arrive at your booked accommodation just after midday

Fascinating temple complex - worth more time than we could give it. We followed it up with a nearby performance of the epic Ramayana, which was excellent.
