The hotel is housed in a historic castle-like building that was constructed in the early 20th century as a private residence for the wealthy Mexican industrialist, Enrique de Olvera. The castle was inspired by European Gothic architecture and features ornate details such as pointed arches, turrets, and intricate stonework. In the 1930s the property was sold to the Mexican government and it was eventually converted into a hotel. Today, the Castillo Santa Cecilia is a luxurious hotel with 24 guest rooms, each of which is uniquely decorated with antique furnishings and artwork. The hotel offers a range of amenities including a restaurant, bar, outdoor swimming pool and gardens with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. One of the hotel's main attractions is its impressive collection of artwork, which includes works by famous Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera. The hotel also has a rich history and has hosted many famous guests, including Hollywood stars and political figures.
Bocamina SanCayetano
The Mina de San Cayetano Valenciana, also known simply as Valenciana, is a historic silver mine located near the city of Guanajuato in central Mexico. The mine was first discovered in the late 16th century, and it became one of the most important silver mines in Mexico during the colonial period. The mine is known for its rich history and its impressive engineering, with underground tunnels extending for over 20 kilometers. The mine produced an enormous amount of silver, estimated to be worth billions of dollars by today's standards. The wealth generated by the mine was used to build many of the beautiful colonial-era buildings and churches in Guanajuato. Today, the Mina de San Cayetano Valenciana is open to visitors for tours. Visitors can descend into the mine and see the underground workings, including the original tunnels and shafts. The tour also includes a visit to the mine's museum, which houses a collection of artifacts and tools used by the miners.

This was an outstanding private tour. The meeting point pickup up was super easy and our tour guide and driver were right on time. Having a private tour, we were able to learn about the area and history of the mine during transport which allowed us to focus on seeing the facilities on arrival. Michel was a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. I recommend this for a break away from Guanajuato city buzz.

This was such a wonderful tour! Our guide, Ramses, was so kind, patient, and knowledgable. The ex-hacienda we started at was truly beautiful and we loved the various themed gardens throughout. Seeing the architecture and the many different flora was just stunning. We then appreciated the experience of going down into one of the mines and learning the history and the conditions of the many workers who did this. Also, the Valenciana church was also a beautiful stop. This was a great day!

Our guide, Flor, took us to 3 mining sites (and to the dam and reservoir), each famous for its own reasons. Her knowledge and love of local history were contagious, and we learned so much from our time with her. We didn't go to the heavily touristy sites, so I felt we had a deeper experience of the mining history and all it encompasses.

This tour was probably our favorite of our trip to San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato ... the Hacienda visit was so beautiful and the mines were fascinating and the history of their impact on Guanajuato and Mexico was amazing to learn. Our guide was so knowledgeable, friendly, passionate, and seemed to truly enjoy conveying his expertise of this very important part of Guanajuato. Very highly recommend!!!

Ramses was an excellent tour guide for the Guanajuato mines and former haciendas, and was very knowledgeable about both. This was a really interesting tour, and we really felt the value of having a good guide for it.

An excellent overview of the sad and cruel history of the mining industry of Guanajuato. On the other hand you get to see the beautiful gardens of the Haciendas, which are now owned by the city. The driver and guide was very responsive in explanations and helpful answering questions. Well worth it!
