Castelo dos Mouros
Moorish Castle – Sintra Monuments Skirting two Sintra mountain ranges, the Moorish Castle dates back to the early days of the Moorish occupation of the Peninsula - the eighth century. After many attempts, was finally taken by Dom Afonso Henriques first king of Portugal in 1147, and was built the first Christian Chapel of the city, dedicated to St. Peter of Penaferrim. In the romantic period, in 1860, the walls were restored under the supervision of Dom Fernando II, husband of Dona Maria II, who wooded the surrounding areas, and gave a new dignity to the ancient medieval ruins. Noteworthy is the Moorish Cistern inside and the so-called Royal Tower. Located about 3.5 km from the historic center of Sintra.
Park and National Palace of Pena
Park and National Palace of Pena Museums and Palaces Pena National Palace Visit the fantastic Pena Palace exponent of 19th century Romanticism in Portugal. Set on the top of Monte da Pena, the palace was built on the site of a former monastery. Built by D. Fernando de Saxe Coburg-Gotha, who married Queen Dona Maria II in 1836. After falling in love with Sintra, he decided to buy the convent and surrounding lands to build a summer palace for the royal family. A restaurant has been installed in one of the palace wings, with a terrace offering a beautiful panoramic view over the Sintra Mountains and the coast.

This was, without question, the worst tour I have ever experienced. We booked what was supposed to be a private, half-day tour from Lisbon to Sintra — an expensive choice, but we wanted to make the most of our limited time in Portugal. Unfortunately, what we received was essentially just overpriced transportation with none of the promised “guided” experience. From the very beginning, our “guide” Francisco set the tone by not even greeting us properly at pickup. He never introduced himself, never explained what the day would look like, and offered no insights at all. When we arrived in the beautiful village of Sintra, he simply left us on our own. At Pena Palace, things went from disappointing to outright unacceptable. Francisco didn’t accompany us inside, claiming he couldn’t find parking. Instead of guiding us through the palace — the entire point of hiring a tour — he left us stranded. Worse still, he pressured us to cut in line. When staff stopped us (rightfully so), he started shouting at them, claiming he had been doing this “for three years.” Then he told us to cut in line anyway, which I refused to do. As a result, I had to walk all the way back down to join the line properly, wasting even more time. At no point did Francisco provide any historical context, cultural insights, or even basic help navigating the sites. He was unprofessional, unhelpful, and frankly rude. Calling this a “tour” is misleading — it was nothing more than a very expensive taxi ride. We will absolutely be requesting a refund. Save your time, money, and patience — avoid this tour at all costs.

The best way to see Sintra if you have limited time. Our guide was prompt and informative. We were able to visit Peña Palace and Quinta da Regalia and see a little bit of the town within 5 hours. We highly recommend this tour!

Francisco was very knowledgeable. Learned a lot about Portugal history. He drops you where you need to go but does not accompany you while touring.

We had a wonderful time touring Sintra and the Palace. Our guide Francisco was so helpful and explained everything in great detail. We appreciated the many recommendations in Sintra and upon our return to Lisbon.
