We had a wonderful time walking around Beppu with our guide. We learned about the faults that cause the hot springs and walked to see a few local onsen. Saw a shrine and a few very old streets with bars/shopping. Went up the tower and had some great views of the city. Visited a few local shops that specialize in creations made of bamboo. One of the highlights of our entire trip to Japan was going to the artist house and meeting a few of the artists and getting a tour of the studios. Such a cool experience and a great program funded by a local nonprofit.

Tomi our local, guide was enthusiastic and thorough in her local knowledge . She brought us to a bamboo “factory” which was the highlight of the 3 hour tour . It made us realise that this age old craft is dying and more should be done to save it . I would suggest that tour operators such as Viator should encourage your local partners to incorporate “vanishing crafts” in the tour itinerary thus helping the tradition trade to continue .
