Arashiyama

Arashiyama, located in western Kyoto, Japan, is a picturesque district renowned for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. It is best known for the iconic Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, where visitors can walk through a mesmerizing pathway lined with towering bamboo stalks. The area is also home to the historic Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site with stunning gardens, and the scenic Togetsukyo Bridge, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Arashiyama’s charm is especially captivating during the cherry blossom season in spring and the vibrant autumn foliage, making it a popular destination year-round.

Kinkakuji Temple

Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, was originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. After his death, the villa was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple. The structure reflects a blend of traditional Japanese and Chinese architectural styles. Although the original building was destroyed by arson in 1950, it was rebuilt in 1955, with the top two floors covered in gold leaf, symbolizing purity and enlightenment.

We had the best day. Aka reached out to us the night before to confirm time and details. He picked us up on time and as described. We expected just a driver for the day, but Aka was so much more. He walked us to the front door of temples and described the history and could answer any questions. We learned so much and when we told him we had been to a few places (so we crossed them off) he added on the Njio Castle. We didn’t even know it about it and it ended up being one of the highlights of our day. He was also very helpful when we were quite indecisive on the money park. We did end up hiking up to the park and again the family said it was another highlight of our day. It was a long day but we fit in about 3 days worth of stuff. This is exactly what we had hoped for, Highly recommend!

Nadu was a very good driver. He took us to all the sights we wanted and was adaptable to fit everything in and get us back to the ship on time. He often walked us to entry points so we wouldn’t get lost. Very personable. We would recommend him for sure

  • Simply a shuttle service and therefore not worth the price.

As a fellow reviewer commented, this is nothing more than a shuttle service. We were driven to each stop where the driver would point out the direction of the attraction and then wait in the car. When we asked why we were not getting a tour guide when other reviewers mentioned getting a tour by this same driver, he, Nadu, said we would have to pay him 10,000 yen in cash for this. This is on top of the over $500 we paid for the booking online. Additionally, at the time of my booking and this review, no where on the booking does it say this is an option and no where on the booking does it say that a guide is not included. The proprietors are either intentionally misleading customers or the driver is fraudulent. I would absolutely not recommend this to anyone. There are better, cheaper and more honest options out there.

We had the most incredible day in Kyoto thanks to our driver and guide, Nadu! From start to finish, he made the experience seamless, personalized, and truly unforgettable. Nadu was not only punctual and professional, but incredibly flexible—he tailored the itinerary to our interests and pace, making sure we had time to really enjoy each stop without ever feeling rushed. His local knowledge added so much depth to every site we visited, from the peaceful Bamboo Grove in Arashiyama to the iconic Golden Pavilion and the vibrant Fushimi Inari Shrine. A huge bonus? Nadu’s photo-taking skills! He knew all the best angles and was more than happy to help us capture the moments—definitely appreciated for making the memories last. If you’re looking to explore Kyoto in comfort and see it all in a day, this is the way to do it. Highly recommend—and ask for Nadu if you can!
