The Monte Toboggans Sledges first originated in the early 19th century when they were used as first means of "downhill" public transportation by the local residents who wanted to travel quickly from the village of Monte to the city of Funchal. Presently and for a number of years now, the Sledges are used to transport thousands of tourists every year, seeking a ride full of emotions, adrenaline and an unforgettable experience with splendid views over the city and beyond. We Partner with Carreiros do Monte to give you this thrilling adventure.
We will take a walk around Largo da Fonte, a very famous square and beautiful with its gardens, then we go see the beautiful church of Monte where we can find the last tomb of the last Austro-Hungarian emperor. In the end you will take the fun ride of going down in the Toboggan sled.
Note: Please note that it is not allowed to ride the biggest sled when you are only one person or two person.

What To Expect
Paroquia de Nossa Senhora do Monte
On the high altar is the image of Our Lady of Monte, venerated since the beginning of the settlement of the island of Madeira. In one of the side chapels was the tomb of Charles de Habsbourg, the last emperor of Austria, who lived in exile in Madeira.

5.00A fantastic experience and a great way to get down the steep roads of Madeira. It barely lasts 10 mins, but it's a must if you're going to this island. It's like you're in a 'Flintsone Rally Car' as your guides take you sideways around corners and pilot you through these tight streets. I would avoid doing this if the cruise ships are in as the queues for this and the cable car rides are ridiculous.

5.00Our Private Trip started by meeting our guides Francisco and Eduardo right next to our hotel. The trip was perfect and they are very knowledgeable. It felt like a going on a trip with our friends. Since it is a private, we felt very comfortable with timing and took our time to explore any part of the trip without any urgency like the big bus tours. Totally recommend this 3 hour tour to visit the town of Machico and go on the amazing Sled Ride.

5.00We have done above tour in May 2022. Our guide was Richard, very sympathic, very friendly, we experienced and on the tour to Monte with already a lot of explanations. At Monte he shows and explainde us the railway museum and the history of the railway, the Botanic garden and the church with the history. Although in English the was no problem to understand and his explanation were excellent. Her bought the tickeect for the sledge and was waiting with us in the row for 1 hour until we got our sledge. The tour with the sledge was excellent and a big fun and shortly after arrival Richard picked us up at the arrival station to bring us back to the hotel. And, 1 week after return home, we received a lot of photos made by Richard. Let's summarize: It was a phantastic experience and can be very much recommended. And, Pearl of Atlantic has to alter our date and contcted us well in advance, in German language, so that we could find a solution which suits both of us. Next time at Madeira we will do this trip again.

5.00We had a wonderful half day tour with Richard of the Monte area of Madeira and learned all about the history and the fact there was a train once upon a time. Of course, the toboggan sled was the highlight and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Yes it’s a tourist hotspot, but it was fabulous nevertheless!

5.00Really good trip. Richard our guide was lovely - happy, very knowledgeable and accommodating. The gardens on the Monte are stunning and then we had an exciting ride down the hill in the baskets. Highly recommended.
