Ama’s Surf School Weligama Sri Lanka was originally founded to help all those surfers who felt they had plateaued or were struggling to progress. The enthusiast who loves being in the ocean but can’t work out how to take their surfing to the next level. While for some riding broken waves in the white water suits them, for most this is just the start of a longer surfing journey fuelled by the dream of gliding along the open face of waves trimming and turning in harmony with the ocean.

What To Expect

For total beginners, soft surf boards are used at first, then later moving onto fibreglass boards. Whether you take a lesson or enroll on one of our Surf courses, you will learn all the core skills needed to begin safe, successful surfing: Surf safety Jump up techniques Footwork and stance Core balance techniques Turning the board Paddling out and efficient paddling Paddling technique Catching and riding unbroken waves Also, all our beginner surfing courses contain excellent background information that will really expand your surfing knowledge.

My husband and I had two lessons with Rati who was super patient with me as a beginner whilst also teaching my husband who was an intermediate. We both learned so much in just two lessons and definitely feel like better surfers now. Would recommend 100%

I was on the surfboard here for the first time and after my first lesson I learned a lot. Sippu was in my opinion making the best, funniest and most patient surf instructor. He gave super good tips and always called out to you at the right moment what to do. I feel like I've been through my third year. Surf hour to have already developed a super good feeling for surfing. Would recommend this surf school to anyone!

We were there twice with our son and it was amazing. Our son got his own instructor. Seneth did a great job, very patient, friendly but top professional. The hole AMA team was so helpful. Communication over WhatsApp was very easy. Would love to come back. Highly recommend AMA Surf School!

We booked a couples surfing lesson. My girlfriend had surfed before, so she didn't need any support from the teacher. Lucky for me, I had a private lesson with 1:1 supervision while my girlfriend surfed on her own. I learned more in these 1.5 hours than in a whole week of surf camp in the South of France and I never thought I would be able to stand. I was proven wrong and actually stood several times 🤙🏻 So it was a really great experience. The teacher always gave me direct feedback and showed me what to look out for on the next wave. With success. It was great fun and a great experience! 🥳

Extremely professional. We went 2 days in a row and our instructor, Sammy who has been teaching for 15 years was very careful at the theoretical part. The lesson started with a bit of theory and exercices for pop off then we went in the water. In the water he paid very good attention and noticed our mistakes & kept giving us tips on how to overcome the difficulties we had. On the second lesson he talked to us about the main mistakes we made the previous days and helped us work on them on the shore. When we went in the water we did even better than the previous day. Needless to say that we got up on the board starting the first day. Will be back next year! If you go, ask for Sammy.

Great surf school in Weligama. We had Santa as teacher for 4 days and he was amazing! Would recommend 10/10! Good learning technique, careful with safety and great fun! We would definitely love to come back. Miguel and Paola

Picked this school based on feedback and were very pleased! The instructors were very attentive, watching our every move - how you get up, how you put your feet, how you hold the hull. Marking all the details at once, it really helped. Always supported and rejoiced in our success. Sippu and Ache are real professionals and very cool guys!😊 Ama (master of the school) and the rest of the staff are also very nice and pleasant people! We had a great time and got significant results! Good boards, they are monitored, waxed before each class, change consumables if necessary (footrest, lichen, etc.) If you don't speak English, don't worry, the basics are already clear and even in Russian😊. "Rock... Get up... Look ahead!"

Perfect session for two beginners, optimising the time with a little theory beforehand and maximising time in the water. We were appropriately pushed to attempt waves by ourselves within the same session to gain confidence - the teacher was super friendly and the whole vibe great!
