The Angkor Temple complex in Cambodia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 9th century when it was built by the Khmer Empire. The complex covers an area of over 400 square kilometers and includes over 100 temples, the most famous of which is Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat, the most famous temple in the complex, was built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a state temple and mausoleum. It is considered one of the largest religious monuments in the world and is renowned for its intricate carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology. Over the centuries, the Angkor Temple complex fell into disrepair as the Khmer Empire declined and was eventually abandoned in the 15th century. The temples were reclaimed by the jungle and remained hidden for centuries until they were rediscovered by a French explorer in the 19th century.

Bayon Temple

The Bayon Temple is a well-known and iconic temple located in the ancient city of Angkor in Cambodia. It was built in the late 12th or early 13th century by King Jayavarman VII, who is known for his grand building projects and empire-building in the region. The Bayon Temple was originally dedicated to the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, which was prominent in Cambodia at the time. The temple complex also includes various galleries, terraces, and corridors featuring bas-reliefs that depict historical events, religious ceremonies, and everyday life during the time of King Jayavarman VII. Over the centuries, the Bayon Temple fell into disrepair and was largely abandoned, as the Khmer Empire declined and the region was beset by warfare and political instability. It was rediscovered in the 19th century by French explorers and has since been restored and preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
