The Great Mosque of Kairouan

The Great Mosque is the symbol of Kairouan. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful mosques in the world, one of the most impressive monuments in all of the Maghreb! Its religious prestige makes Kairouan the 4th holy city of Islam. We admire its imposing minaret, its majestic courtyard of impressive dimensions, surrounded by superbly drawn arcades and sheltering a sundial, and the high doors of richly carved cedar wood. They open onto the prayer rooms, adorned with dozens of marble columns. Built in 670, this architectural masterpiece whose appearance evokes an adobe fortress has inspired other mosques in the Maghreb.

Beligh was a great guide! Informative, knowledgeable, funny, and super friendly! He went out of his way to make us feel at home in Tunisia and we really enjoyed his full day tour!

  • Great, but rushed tour.

This was an amazing tour with an enthusiastic guide that allowed us to see these sites during our short stay in Tunisia. Our only complaint is that it was incredibly rushed with only 15-20 minutes maximum at each site. We even left early and changed our route to allow more time. This became frustrating when there seemed to be no rush at all in a rug store which they made difficult to leave (downsides of being tourists). If you are older or want more time at these sites then travel to them separately but if you want a quick visit to multiple places like us then this tour was fun and informative.

Great day trip with like minded travellers. Felt safe as a solo female traveller. A bit more £££ compared to the general costs of things in Tunisia

I recently took a tour with our Tunisian guide Baligh, and it was truly a fantastic experience. He was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humor that made the entire day even more enjoyable. We visited Kairouan, El Jem, and Monastir together, and his explanations, stories, and fun attitude brought each place to life. He made sure everyone felt comfortable and engaged, and he was always happy to answer questions or help with anything we needed. If you’re looking for a guide who is both professional and genuinely entertaining, I highly recommend Baligh. This tour was one of the highlights of my trip!

The grand mosque in Kairouan and the amphitheater in El Jem are not to be missed; impressive and with great history behind - I am glad that my guide suggested to visit the museum in El Jem and the Roman villas instead of Monastir; that made it for a more interesting and rewarding day - with Monastir it would have been too much running around. My guide was curteous and knowledgeable. The two negatives were the driving, especially when leaving the highway on the way to Kairouan which is a two-way road and at least once the driver overtook almost on a curve without much visibility - he would also drive above the speed limit on the highway but at least it was a divided highway; the other was that we went to see an old palace which was really a place which sells carpets - the guide should have explained this ahead of time. The person who was selling the carpets was quite persistent and in the end I bought a shawl so as to stop being pestered. These tactics don’t leave a good impression for such a wonderful country with genuinely nice people that I encountered in my trip.
