The Great Mosque of Kairouan

The Great Mosque is the symbol of Kairouan. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful mosques in the world, one of the most impressive monuments in all of the Maghreb! Its religious prestige makes Kairouan the 4th holy city of Islam. We admire its imposing minaret, its majestic courtyard of impressive dimensions, surrounded by superbly drawn arcades and sheltering a sundial, and the high doors of richly carved cedar wood. They open onto the prayer rooms, adorned with dozens of marble columns. Built in 670, this architectural masterpiece whose appearance evokes an adobe fortress has inspired other mosques in the Maghreb.

This tour covers a lot of ground! We were able to see a lot in just one day. The car was comfortable and the driver was very good. Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. He recommended us a good place for lunch. We got back to the hotel at the time he predicted which was also nice. We would definitely recommend!

It’s clear she loves what she does and her energy is infectious. I’ve traveled all around the world and Imen is one of the best.

The visits to Kairouan Mosque and Medina, El Jem the amphitheatre, and the Ribat of Monastir were very good. Driver, vehicle, and guide were very good. It was a 10 hour trip for maybe 3.5 hours of visiting.

We had a wonderful day trip and I would absolutely recommend it. Our guide, Yaya, was punctual, friendly, and incredibly patient. The atmosphere was relaxed the entire time and we never felt rushed, which mattered a lot because my mom is 62 and moves a bit more slowly. Even though the Aghlabid Basins were closed that day, Yaya handled it perfectly and took us to an alternative water well where we could get up close to the working camels, which ended up being a really special experience. He also suggested a great place to eat, and we had plenty of time to enjoy the meal. On the drive, he even stopped so we could take photos of the white flamingos, which was such a thoughtful touch. Yaya was extremely knowledgeable and explained the history and foundations of every site we visited in a clear, engaging way. We returned to Tunis feeling like we had truly seen and understood a lot in one day, and we felt very accomplished. Experience: Excellent, well organized, flexible when plans changed Admission fee: All admission fees were included, exactly as described in the tour Length of visit: Perfect pacing, enough time at each stop Atmosphere: Calm and comfortable Crowd size: In the car it was only me and my mom (so it felt private). At the sites, since it was January, everything was much less crowded than usual, which was amazing Staff: Outstanding, professional, and kind Best for: Anyone, really!

The. trip was amazing!. We were able to see the great mosque of Kairouan, got to explore all levels above and below of the amphitheatre at El Jem (without the crowds of the Roman Coliseum!), and went inside the Ribat of Monaster (an ancient seaside fort). It was just me and my wife, and we were able to go at our own pace, taking our time, fully satisfied with everything we did and never feeling rushed. And our guide Zied and driver Rabii were both awesome. Zied had advanced historic and cultural knowledge since he has been studying this his adult life. I always ask a LOT of questions on tours, and Zied was able to give a detailed answer to every one of my questions. We had a wonderful and unforgettable time and HIGHLY recommend this excursion if you want to experience some of the highlights of the ancient culture of Tunisia!

I am glad I booked this trip. I am also very glad that I asked for a guide. Our guide Imen and driver showed up well in time, were very professional and friendly. The vehicle for the 4 of us was spacious, and clean. We were starting from Tunis, so there was a bit of a drive, but it was planned very well. Imen introduced the history to us, showed us the plan for the day, and answered many of our questions. She is friendly, well-spoken, and courteous. The sites are amazing, and her knowledge and information made it better. We also enjoyed local sweets in Kairouan, and loved the atmosphere. Overall, this is a great experience. Highly recommended.

  • A Fab day in Tunisia

Mr Chaouki is a tour guide to dream of, deeply knowledgeable and very friendly. He took time out to ask and understand our interests in Tunisia and then proceeded to rearrange our itinerary for the day, eg going to El Jem early morning when it was less crowded so that we could enjoy the colosseum without the queuing and crowds. Afterwards we went to Kairouan and he made the rest on the day really memorable. But here’s the thing on our way to the Medina, Chaouki stopped by a bakery and got a freshly baked piping hot Tabouna (Local Bread) which he shared with us generously. The taste of it… Heavenly! He further came thru for us as we had a slight hiccup with another Guide for a tour of Carthage. Chaouki made the trip worthwhile.
