Hope on a bumboat and head to Pulau Ubin, an island off the northeast of Singapore. Considered the last kampong (village) in Singapore, one is transported back in time to life in the '60s, where water is still drawn from wells, stoves fired by wood and lights powered by generator. Rent a bicycle or simply hike, and explore the disused granite quarries, traditional kampong houses, fruit orchards and mangroves. A perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The bike riding was easy, just a few shallow hills. Keith our tour guide offer a lot in terms of history, culture, and animal handling. He was also extremely patient and helpful.

Pulau Ubin is a beautiful and secluded islet that is part of the City State of Singapore. You can get there by taking a bus to Changi Villagene then a motor boat from Changi Point FerryTerminal. Once on the island only your legs and rental bikes will let you explore tropical nature. There are maps on the island but it's easy to find your way around. In the village some simple restaurants offer unpretentious dishes.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Pulau Ubin with our guide Keith, who was very knowledgeable of the area and passionate about preserving the flora and fauna of the island. Unfortunately, unknown to Keith the stop at Teck Seng’s Place was closed however Keith was able to talk about the house and living standards of the time in great detail with photos. Thank you Keith for a great bicycle tour.

We had a great morning out at Pulau Ubin. Keith our guide kept in contact with us before the tour and helped us with directions to catch the MRT and bus out to the meeting point. Keith was very knowledgeable about Pulau Ubin and Singapore. Keith made hiring the bikes a breeze and made sure we checked them out before we rode. Thanks for a great day out Keith.

I had read that this was a great place to experience life as it was in old Singapore. I expected more of a "national park" sort of experience, with some guides so that we would know where to go and what to do. (I have since learned that there are more guided activities and access to parts of the island on the weekends, and we were there during the week.) The bumboat ride was fun, and the people we interacted with in the village area were friendly. There were quite a few school groups setting up camp and doing activities. It was quite a long Grab ride from our hotel and it was hard to find a ride back.

Keith was knowledgeable and interesting. He paced our walk to suit our fitness and interests. The wildlife was abundant and engaging and the wetlands gave us an insight into what old Singapore was like. The village while a little commercial was authentic and rustic but very welcoming. We loved our time on the island. There were ferries ($4 each) coming and going all the time, so there was very little waiting time. We would highly recommend this tour.
