The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries and they have only recently invited guests to be part of their daily life. You will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 300 wild reindeer who will swarm all around and some will even eat from your hands. You will then be invited for hot drinks around the fire inside a warm candlelit gamme (Traditional Sami Hut) where lunch, bidos, cooked over the open fire will be served (a traditional Sami stew which is often served at Sami weddings and other special occasions).
After lunch you will be invited into a lavvu (Sami tent) and gather around the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests.

My husband and I had an amazing day interacting with the reindeers and learning about Sami culture! After a short ride of 30 minutes from city centre, we arrived at the winter camp where the reindeers were already waiting for us. We had loads of fun feeding them, soaking in the most beautiful snowy scenery. After interacting with the reindeers, we were served a delicious traditional meal and got the chance to learn about reindeer herding and Sami culture. Our guide was very nice and prepared, making our experience both informative and memorable.

Feeding the reindeer was nice and the stew was good despite the lack of bread. The weather was not on our side for the sleigh ride, too bad. Too many people at the same time. item much too expensive

We joined the Arctic Reindeer tour the day after our whale watching trip, and it turned out to be an incredible and heartwarming experience. Here’s a detailed account of our day: Meeting Point Confusion The day started with a small hiccup. Around 10 of us were waiting outside the designated meeting point, unsure of where to go, as no bus seemed to have arrived. After waiting for 10 minutes, I messaged the tour organizers, who promptly informed us that we needed to use the back entrance of the building. They even sent a photo to clarify, which was very helpful. It would be great if the tour provided a photo of the entrance alongside the written instructions to avoid such confusion in the future. Scenic Bus Ride Once we boarded the bus, it was smooth sailing. The vehicle was clean, modern, and comfortable. The 40-minute drive to the Sami family’s reindeer camp was breathtaking, offering stunning views of the fjords and snow-covered landscapes. Warm Welcome by the Sami Host Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by Johan, a member of the Sami family, who guided us into one of their cozy huts. Seated around a crackling fire, we were given a brief introduction to what the day would entail, setting a relaxed and welcoming tone for the experience. Feeding the Reindeer Next, we got to feed the reindeer, which was far more delightful than I had imagined! The reindeer were gentle and curious, and the interaction felt magical. A tip: be mindful of their antlers when feeding them, and always respect their space and natural behavior. This was also the perfect opportunity to take unique and memorable photos. We joined the morning tour, which I’d recommend for the excellent natural lighting—ideal for photos. Cozy hut and Delicious Treats After spending about an hour with the reindeer, we returned to another warm and beautifully decorated hut. Here, we were served hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and cookies, which were perfect after the outdoor cold. We also enjoyed a delicious meal of either reindeer or vegetarian soup, both of which were hearty and flavorful. The hut also had a small, charming gift shop featuring reindeer antler crafts and other Sami-themed items. Restrooms with heating were available outside, but do watch out for icy patches when walking in the restroom cabin. Sami Storytelling and Joik Singing One of the highlights of the tour was Johan’s storytelling session. He shared fascinating insights into the Sami culture, traditions, and history. He also performed a traditional Sami joik, which was deeply moving and added a truly authentic touch to the experience. Return Journey The tour lasted about 4 hours in total, including 1–1.5 hours interacting with the reindeer and ~1 hour enjoying the cozy hut and cultural presentation. The bus ride back to the meeting point was just as scenic and relaxing as the journey there. Final Thoughts I wasn’t expecting this tour to be so engaging and full of different emotions. The combination of interacting with the reindeer, learning about Sami traditions, and enjoying delicious food made it an unforgettable experience. All four of us in our group had a fantastic time, and I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a unique and meaningful Arctic adventure.
