The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries and they have only recently invited guests to be part of their daily life. You will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 300 wild reindeer who will swarm all around and some will even eat from your hands. You will then be invited for hot drinks around the fire inside a warm candlelit gamme (Traditional Sami Hut) where lunch, bidos, cooked over the open fire will be served (a traditional Sami stew which is often served at Sami weddings and other special occasions).

After lunch you will be invited into a lavvu (Sami tent) and gather around the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests.

It was a very expensive trip for what it was but we had a good afternoon and enjoyed feeding the large herd of reindeer. Daniel the farmer was informative about reindeer farming in Norway. . It is definitely a do once experience rather than one to be repeated.

The reindeer were so cute. I'd recommend moving away from the crowds when feeding the reindeer as they can all swarm up around. It can get a little scary with all of them surrounding you. I'd also recommend bringing shoe spikes. They offered shoe spikes but they ran out. It was very icy when we went in February. The fire and soup were great!

  • Worth the trip!

It is a great way to learn about this indigenous culture of Tromso while supporting their livelihood. The reindeer feeding is fun and entertaining. You learn a lot about reindeer and how important they are the Sami. The lunch is a bowl of soup, a hot beverage and some cookies, so do not expect to leave super full. Overall, I enjoyed it even though it was a little on the expensive side for the actual activity.

Such a memorable experience! The reindeer are incredibly gentle, there were so many of them you didn't know which one to feed first. They will sometimes poke each other, but it's just a wonderful thing to watch, just nature taking it's course. The story of the Sami culture revolving around reindeer was really moving!
