Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums feature many works of art that belonged to the different Popes and are full of artistic beauty. Here is a glimpse of some of the most beautiful things to see in the Vatican Museums. Rooms and Galleries of the Vatican Museums, as the Greek Cross Room, the Gallery of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries, Raphael Rooms and much more! From a relatively small collection of statues brought in by Julius II, it grew into a gigantic museum to a point that nobody even knows how many items are kept in the vaults and galleries of the Vatican.

We met our tour guide, Cinzia, early in the morning at the tour office in Rome. Everything was impressively organized from the start—groups were quickly sorted, headsets handed out, and suddenly we were being smoothly guided into peak Vatican efficiency. Before things officially began, I grabbed a coffee from the café next door. Highly recommend this move—but fair warning if you’re visiting during pollen season: Rome’s pollen situation does not play. I don’t have allergies, but that morning it felt like the air itself was personally targeting my throat. Coffee definitely helped. Bring a refillable water bottle as well. You will thank me later. Once inside, Cinzia kept everything moving at a perfect pace—structured, informative, but never rushed in a way that made you feel like you were missing the point of where you actually were. Some of the artwork connected to the infamous Borgia family immediately stood out—stunning, intense, and a little dramatic in that very “history was absolutely personal here” way. And then you reach the Sistine Chapel. It’s so pristine even after all these centuries. Michelangelo really said, “I will paint the entire ceiling and make everyone who enters question their life choices, their artistic abilities, and possibly their understanding of existence.” No photos. No talking. Just a room full of people staring upward in collective silence while your brain tries to process the fact that one person created something that powerful. It doesn’t feel real—it feels like the ceiling is actively doing something to you emotionally. After the guided portion, we were given the option to stay behind and explore on our own, which is absolutely the move. This is where everything slows down and you can actually absorb what you rushed past earlier. We stayed behind and explored the Vatican Grottoes beneath St. Peter’s Basilica, where former Popes are interred. It’s a completely different atmosphere down there—quieter, heavier, and more reflective after everything above. You really need a full day here. Maybe more. The Vatican doesn’t fit into a schedule—it kind of rearranges your perception of time instead. Final verdict: Do the tour. If you like art in all of its different forms and splendor, you will definitely enjoy and appreciate it. Keep your eyes on Cinzia. She was a wonderful tour guide that kept us altogether and the flow of the tour running smoothly. Drink coffee. Fight the pollen. And stay behind to enjoy what’s inside—because once Michelangelo enters the picture, rushing through just isn’t an option

We visited the Vatican with What a Life Tours on a Saturday after a holiday. We lined up at around 0740 for security, the doors didn’t open until 0800. We still had to wait about 15mins for security check after doors opened due to the heavy crowds and number of tour groups. During that time waiting we received important context about the Sistine Chapel as our guide was not able to speak to us while inside the Chapel itself. This was certainly helpful and doubled as a way to pass time during our relatively short wait. The regular non-tour line for entry without a ticket was upwards of a 1.5-2 hour wait, unsure about the ticketed line. Our tour guide Elaine was wonderful. If you can request her, do it! She provided important context to everything we saw and shared with us many hidden gems. She was energetic, passionate, and extremely knowledgeable. Elaine was able to help sneak us to the front of massive crowds quickly at such works as the Pieta. The tour group was capped at 10 people, our group was 9 total. We started the tour in the Vatican museums, seeing such highlights as the Gallery of Tapestries, Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms etc. After the Museum we progressed into the Sistine chapel. Our group agreed on 20 mins to take in the Chapel before the tour continued, allowing time to take it all in, this was negotiable with the guide and could’ve been longer or shorter. It turned out to be a perfect length of time to view the Sistine Chapel. As we were with a tour group we were permitted to go directly into St. Peter’s from the Chapel, again a huge timesaver. The tour continued in St. Peter’s with information provided on the statues etc. Elaine provided us with further activities available to us such as climbing the Dome or entering the Grottoes before ending the tour by watching a changing of the Swiss Guard. The tour ran exactly 3.5hrs from start to finish. Elaine offered those in the group the chance to leave the group if wishing to skip parts of the museum and head directly to the Sistine Chapel near the beginning of the tour. This would of course mean not being able to skip directly through to St. Peter’s Basilica and would prevent you from visiting the remainder of the museum exhibits. If you want your Vatican experience to go swimmingly book this tour now! This was the second tour we have done with What a Life Tours after doing a Colosseum/Forum tour with them. Both of these experiences were top notch so do not overlook their offerings for other tours.

Elaine was highly knowledgeable and provided a comprehensive and informative tour. There was a huge amount of information to digest and process, and it would have been good to have a little less personal information intermingled with the historical commentary.
