1.00DONT BOOK My husband and I booked a private car with an English speaking driver to go to Ninh Binh. The description says the driver should speak English and it is for a full day. Unfortunately, our driver did not speak English at all, which led to delays throughout the day as we had to rely on translation apps and it was more difficult to meet and find each other after stops. At 3:40 PM we were at the Bear sanctuary and our driver told us to hurry and leave as soon as possible since he wanted to get back to Hanoi sooner. We were unable to stay until 4:30 when the main Bear viewing time is. The whole experience was disappointing since it did not match the description and we missed out on parts of the day we were really excited for. I requested a partial refund from Viator and they denied us without reason.

5.00We booked this tour which is a day-trip with a car and driver to Ninh Binh just a day before and it was perfect! Our driver, Hieu was right on time at 7:30 to pick us up at our hotel and drive us in 2h to the first sightseeing place. He was extremely careful while driving in the very crowded and busy roads of Vietnam, and attentive to our safety and our needs. We highly recommend him and this tour if you want to get out of Hanoi by yourselves and without being with a tour, as it was really worth it. The price we paid 100 was also reasonable as it included the fuel and toll charges but of course, not the acces fee to the sites.
Ninh Binh which is also called Halong Bay on land is less crowded with tourists than Halong bay although one may find there are still too many... and has nice spots where you can have nice views of the limestone rocks and mountains surrounded by rice paddies.
