The tropical dry forest is one of the most vulnerable and rare biomes of Central America. In Guanacaste, the characteristic six month dry season leaves the land susceptible to wildfires that often devastate the forest and its wildlife. As if this was not enough, over the past 40 years widespread deforestation and large scale agriculture have reduced the dry forests to a mere fraction of what they were in the past.

As if this was not enough, over the past 40 years widespread deforestation and large scale agriculture have reduced the dry forests to a mere fraction of what they were in the past. Undoubtedly this type of forest houses one of the most interesting and complex ecosystems of the area; the natural scarcity of water has caused wildlife to evolve and thrive in an environment with fewer nutrients than other tropical forests while also maintaining the ability endure six months of intense tropical rain. Samara Trails tour takes you through the Werner Sauter Biological Reserve, one of the only private reserves in Guanacaste.

The tour with Alex was just great. He is incredibly familiar with flora and fauna and has spent so much time and effort to give us the absolute best experience. Thank you for the great time we can highly recommend it.

It was a simple hike, but we saw a lot of birds and monkeys. The overlook of Samara and Carillo was beautiful. It was a nice early morning walk with great information.

It was great. The guides are very knowledgeable and it was not too difficult of a trail. Saw about 25 to 30 hauling monkeys including babies. The view of Samara beach from the top was fantastic. Looked like a postcard.

This was such an incredible experience! My two daughters and I did a tour with Alex from Samara Adventures! He was AMAZING! Super knowledgeable, took his time on the trails to show us and teach us all about the local animals and plants! We got to see so many extraordinary things! Was even more than we expected! I can’t say enough good things about Alex! If you get a chance to go ask for him!

This was an amazing tour!! Christopher was our guide, we are a family of 4 (2 kids) and our group consisted of another family of 4. Christopher did a fantastic job pointing out all the wildlife, plants, trees and insects. Within the first 5 minutes of arrivals we saw MANY howler monkeys, a few babies, and a coati. We also saw capuchin monkeys. It was great to learn about the Guanacaste trees, the “naked Indian” tree and the alligator tooth trees. We saw many butterflies and insects. My kids loved the tour! We did the 2:30 pm hike. Would highly recommend!!

Such a wonderful experience and you get to submerge yourself in nature thoroughly. Luis was such a great Spanish guide, and we got so lucky and saw a couple of white face monkeys before our tour was over. We learned a lot about the area’s plants and trees too. Recommend fully!!
