The tropical dry forest is one of the most vulnerable and rare biomes of Central America. In Guanacaste, the characteristic six month dry season leaves the land susceptible to wildfires that often devastate the forest and its wildlife. As if this was not enough, over the past 40 years widespread deforestation and large scale agriculture have reduced the dry forests to a mere fraction of what they were in the past.

Werner Sauter Biological Reserve
The tropical dry forest is one of the most vulnerable and rare bio-mes of Central America. As if this was not enough, over the past 40 years widespread deforestation and large scale agriculture have reduced the dry forests to a mere fraction of what they were in the past. Undoubtedly this type of forest houses one of the most interesting and complex ecosystems of the area; the natural scarcity of water has caused wildlife to evolve and thrive in an environment with fewer nutrients than other tropical forests while also maintaining the ability endure six months of intense tropical rain. Samara Trails tour takes you through the Werner Sauter Biological Reserve, one of the only private reserves in Guanacaste.

Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. However, there didn't seem to be too much wildlife to see when we were on our tour. I fully recognize that it would have been the season, day or the fact that part of our group was talking the entire time. It was a nice morning, the lookout we walked up to was pretty and they provided good snacks. Also the ride in the open bus/truck was fun.

Loved getting off the beach and into the trees. Our guide, Christopher, was wonderfully knowledgeable and enjoyed answering our many questions and sharing all sorts of interesting facts. Highly recommend - you’ll see more animals in the morning than in the afternoon.

It was nice to get away from the heat for a few hours We didn't see any wildlife, only hearing howlers on the distance but saw plenty of butterflies, birds and different plant species The best part was the hike to the view point, it's all uphill so not ideal for those walking issues and I wouldn't fancy it on a wet day

We had a great experience on our hike. We viewed Howler Monkeys and learned a lot about their behaviour from our knowledgeable guide, Christopher. His passion for the natural world and sharing this, made this hike so enjoyable. We saw several bird species, bats and a Morphos butterfly. The views at the top of the hike are stunning. Thank you Christopher!

We were lucky and were the only ones who booked and thus had a private hike. Our guide was very friendly and showed and told us many. We have seen various hummingbirds, birds and monkeys. Be sure to put on hiking boots! For people who are not good on foot, this excursion is rather not suitable. We recommend the tour in the morning.

From start to finish an experience especially Christopher's knowledge about the Werner Sauter and flora and fauna in the area. When we were back on the bus he spotted another monkey and let us off to see it.

It was a simple hike, but we saw a lot of birds and monkeys. The overlook of Samara and Carillo was beautiful. It was a nice early morning walk with great information.
