ARK D-0: Tito's Nuclear Bunker

In the early 1950s, Josip Broz Tito, the late leader of the former Yugoslavia, ordered the building of a secret bunker that would safeguard the country’s ruling class in case of a nuclear attack. Located 900 feet (270 m) underground, town of Konjic, the 26-year project was only completed in 1979, the year before Tito died, and it was built at a cost equivalent to just under £3 billion ($4.6 billion). If restocked with supplies it would still serve its purpose – allowing 350 people to live and work for six months without ever coming outside.

Blagaj

Blagaj town is home to Buna river spring – Europe’s most beautiful, most powerful, clean and drinkable karst river spring, settled beneath few hundred meters high rock. Water comes out of quite large but stunningly deep cave, which springs amazing 43 cubic meters of water per second. Can you imagine this? Just next to the spring, under the rock, is home to Blagaj Tekke – Dervish house, dating most likely pre or early Ottoman era from early 16th century, as unique sacral-residential example of Islamic architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visiting this complex and learning more about Dervish life in Herzegovina as important part of our history is, MUST DO. For Muslim travelers “Tekija” is place where prayers are hosted 5 times a day and can be attended if wanted. Later, after visit to “Blagajska Tekija” and “Izvor rijeke Bune” before we continue to our ride to Dubrovnik, it is time for lunch. Due to famousness and cleanliness of Buna river the most important thing to taste in Blagaj today, is local trout. Lunch is not included in the tour price, so plan to spend 8/10 EUR per person for great lunch. As mentioned earlier, depending on the tour pace, alternatively lunch can be planned at Jablanica (Stop 3) where you get to taste famous Bosnian roasted lamb. That is why we don’t leave the place before we offer our guests to try locally prepared trout on “Blagaj Way”, enjoying amazing scenery of Buna river spring and Dervish house next to it. Vegetarians don’t worry, we have solutions for you as well

  • A fascinating and thought provoking journey to a part of Europe tourists seldom see

I had worked in this area immediately after the war in the the 1990s and was really keen to see what had happened since. The tour was very well organised and our guide Anwar was excellent. The tour gave us an insight into a beautiful and fascinating part of Europe that tourists seldom see. Travnik and Jace were gorgeous. Scrambling up the citadel tower in Travnik for amazing views, exporing the lovely waterfalls in Jace, the stunning Vrbas Canyon (Grand Canyon move over..) were a privilege to see. It was good to see what was happening in Banja Luka where we had an excllent local guide. Funky Tours had included a night in the central Hotel Ideja here which was fine and we had time to explore the city a bit on our own which was great. Everyone very friendly and helpful - if a bit surprised to see us! We finished at the Jasenovak Concentration Camp Memorial - a sobering remionder of uspeakable horrors.

Our tour was fantastic, lots of great variety and got to see parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina we wouldn’t have otherwise. Tour can be tailored to suit you. Tour guide was very informative and helpful. Would really recommend instead of getting a regular transfer from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik.

In June 2025, we (a group of 8) took Funky’s ‘Split to Dubrovnik Transfer’ tour from Split to Dubrovnik. The trip included a drive with stops from Split to Sarajevo, two nights and two tours in Sarajevo, and a drive with stops from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik. The trip was both interesting and insightful. The stops we made along the way highlighted some of the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The countryside in BiH surprised us with its beauty: mountainous, very green and forested in the north, and more Mediterranean in the south - rocky with lots of scrub brush. Our drivers/tour guides: Adnan (from Split to Sarajevo), Emin and Edo in Sarajevo, and Andar (from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik) were outstanding. Each guide explained the history of each area that we visited and/or passed through, and included much of his personal history and observations about the various areas, particularly the war years in the 1990s, as well as the current state of politics and government in BiH. The vans used by the drivers were large and comfortable and easily accomodated the 8 of us, our driver, and all of our luggage. The four star hotel Funky provided in Sarajevo - Colors Inn - was excellent: great location, large and comfortable rooms, outstanding staff, and a very generous buffet breakfast. All for a surprisingly reasonable price. I would also like to acknowledge the administrative staff we worked with at Funky Tours: Edna and Eldin. Edna arranged our booking and patiently worked with us as our tour group increased from 4 to 6 to 8 people. Eldin helped us work with our driver from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik to ensure that we would arrive in Dubrovnik on time for a group dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in BiH. Excellent experience, excellent staff all around, thank you Funky Tours!

We had a wonderful time on our 3 day transfer from Dubrovnik to Split via Bosnia. We learned so much, and our tour guides and drivers were the best!! A huge thanks to Elma for being so sweet to us and showing us a country that she clearly loves. We especially enjoyed the Siege Tour given by Mustafa. The history of the war in Sarajevo was so interesting and eye opening. Thanks again for everything. Highly recommend!

My wife and I had the privilege to have Salem as our guide. He told us a lot of the history and background of the war in 1990s and his first-hand experience in protecting his country and family. The itineary is wisely designed and we saw many places with nice view and rich history, and most imprtant, saved a lot of trouble for the transport from Split to Sarajevo and allowed me to stay a night at Mostar. I am also very grateful for all colleagues of Funky tour from the first day I sent an email to enquire, who are exceptionally helpful!

Wow! We could not have asked for a better experience with Enis! For such a young man he was absolutely spectacular from his knowledge of sights to his wonderful personality… it made our trip fascinating! All our stops were breathtaking and gave us such an appreciation for the heritage and culture of Bosnia. Hotel was wonderful, lunch stops with great food and wonderful views… I can’t say enough! More than I ever imagined. Funky Tours is top knotch!

Our time in Bosnia and Herzegovina was fantastic, but there are two things that especially stand out. 1. Ema and Amela are great coordinators. I added Funky Tours on WhatsApp to communicate, and they are super responsive. There were some last-minute changes on our part (my wife and I got food poisoning right before arriving to BH, so we had to push the tours back one day) and Ema and Amela were really understanding, supportive, and helpful the entire time. 2. Enes Popara is probably the *best* tour guide I have ever had. He took us on a 2-hour walking tour of Sarajevo; showed us the city (the good and the bad), told captivating stories (historical episodes, as well as those in his life), and how people currently live. We could tell he takes his craft (of being a tour guide) very seriously---thinking consciously about how to structure stories, the way he connects them to present and past, and the use of his IPad to show related material. Finally, he is unapologetically authentic. I would most highly recommend any tour that he gives.

I don’t often take guided tours, but when I do I want them to be exactly like the Funky Tours excursion from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik (via Mostar). My husband and I both said, there’s no way we could have navigated the logistics of all of these sites on our own and, even if we had, we 100% would have missed out on the incredibly nuanced history and anecdotes we learned. Adnan was so approachable and answered all of our questions so thoughtfully. Great experience through and through.

Thank you Ema, Emir, and Senad for such a wonderul family tour and experience in Croatia and Bosnia. Emir and Senad were such great guides throughout the trip and made it a memorable family experience for us all. Thank you so much for introducing us to your home country of Bosnia and for introducing us to the history, cuisine, and culture of both Croatia and Bosnia. The locations, accommodations, and everything was just perfect for our family. We all had such memorable experiences. All of the local guides were great as well. In particular, the siege tour in Sarajevo was unforgettable and a transformative experience. It was just so well planned and executed. We are very thankful and appreciative of all of your hard work and the effort and attention! We cannot wait to come back to visit and to use Funky Tours again!
