Go beyond the standard guidebooks on this history-focused private tour. While most tourists visit only the crowded main palaces, we take you to a hidden gem: Artstetten Castle, the private home and final resting place of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination triggered World War I.
This tour is designed for history lovers who seek deep insights and "off-the-beaten-path" locations. You will connect the tragic end of the Empire at Artstetten with the glorious baroque power of Melk Abbey and the stunning views from the Maria Taferl basilica. With a dedicated driver and a separate guide, you enjoy the luxury of a stress-free day tailored to your pace.
You will discover the intimate side of the Imperial family, seeing personal artifacts often missed in big museums. Standing at the Archduke’s crypt provides a chilling connection to the event that shaped the modern world. It is a day of powerful contrasts: from imperial tragedy to spiritual triumph.

Vienna
We leave Vienna and head west towards the Danube Valley. As we drive through the changing landscapes, your guide will set the scene, explaining the complex history of the Habsburg family and the political tensions that led to 1914.
This fairytale castle with its iconic onion domes was the beloved home of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The Museum: We visit the museum dedicated to his life, seeing personal artifacts that tell the story of a man, a father, and a visionary, not just a historical figure. The Crypt: It is a moving moment to stand in the crypt where he rests side-by-side with his wife, Sophie. This personal connection to the event that changed world history is something you won't forget.

First of all, I am so thankful for this tour as I could not find the Artstetten Castle on any other tour and I really wanted to see it! It did not disappoint and Janie, our tour guide, and Vladimir, driver, were DELIGHTFUL! We ended up having the whole tour to ourselves and Janie was so knowledgeable, full of so much historical information that added so much value to the excursion. This area is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, meticulous, and serene area. The castle was so inspiring. The Archduke’s love story was fascinating, he fell in love with a lady in waiting to the woman who was to marry him and sacrificed much of his nobility inheritances and then to have been assassinated and have been the catalyst to WWI made this so much more of an impactful stop. Schallaburg was also very beautiful and a mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture and full of history. And the Melk Abbey, which is the crown jewel of Melk, is stunning. Everyone sees that and we wouldn’t have wanted to have missed it, but so happy to have the two castles as an option. We loved Janie so much, we booked a Bratislava tour with her the next day since they had the opening. This is her home town. I highly recommend this tour group and cozy tours.
