So, as is my Berlin tradition, on Tuesday I took a cycle tour, in this case the Secrets of Berlin tour with Fat Tire Tours, going from Alexanderplatz, taking in the area around Hackescher Markt and up into Prenzlauerberg. My guide was the lovely Yali, and there was supposed to be another group of eleven with us, who had all due to illness pulled out, leaving me with an individual tour guide. Initial thinking was that because there were just the two of us, we might finish slightly ahead of schedule, we did however run slightly over as we never stopped finding additional conversation points. Highlights for me, the courtyards at Hackescher Markt, the graffiti art and artists collective in the area, Otto Weidt’s workshop for the blind and deaf (if you are unfamiliar with his efforts to save vulnerable people from the Nazis do a quick google search), coffee and radler stops with Yali, and the trip not open to the public to the top of the church tower In Prenzlauerberg and it’s attendant views. The real highlight, 3.5 hours of intelligent conversation in the company of Yari.
