We will begin our journey in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. Known as the “pink city” for the rose-colored volcanic tuff stone used in its buildings, Yerevan is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, founded in 782 BC. Rich in history, culture, and modern charm, the city offers a unique blend of old and new. During the tour, we will discover some of Yerevan’s most iconic landmarks: Republic Square – The heart of the city, surrounded by elegant government buildings and the History Museum of Armenia. In the evenings, the square is especially beautiful thanks to its famous dancing fountains. Mashtots Avenue – One of Yerevan’s main avenues, named after Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet. It is lined with shops, cafés, and cultural institutions.

Aram Khachaturian Opera and Ballet Theatre – A magnificent cultural landmark named after the renowned Armenian composer, hosting opera, ballet, and concert performances. Cascade Complex – A monumental staircase linking the city center with the Monument district, offering breathtaking views of Yerevan and Mount Ararat. It is also home to the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, featuring contemporary art and open-air sculptures. Mother Armenia – A symbolic statue representing peace and strength, located in Victory Park and offering panoramic views over the city. Armash Important Bird Area (Armash Fishponds) Early morning drive to the Armash wetlands near the foothills of Mount Ararat, one of the richest birdwatching sites in the Caucasus and a globally important conservation area. According to tradition, Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned here for 13 years before converting Armenia to Christianity. The site offers one of the most iconic and breathtaking views of Mount Ararat.

Noravank Monastery

Areni Cave & Village Drive to Areni village, famous for its winemaking traditions, and visit Areni Cave (Birds’ Cave). Archaeological discoveries here include the world’s oldest known leather shoe (over 5,500 years old) and the oldest winery (over 6,000 years old), along with ancient tools, pottery, and organic remains dating back to 4200–3500 BC. Noravank Monastery Continue to Noravank Monastery (12th–13th centuries), beautifully located in a dramatic red-rock gorge. This architectural masterpiece is unique for its two-story Surb Astvatsatsin Church and rare depiction of God the Father carved in stone. Karahunj (Zorats Karer) Visit the ancient Karahunj Observatory near Sisian, often compared to Stonehenge. Enjoy a ride on the famous Wings of Tatev cable car (optional), the world’s longest reversible cableway, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The site is surrounded by a unique atmosphere, combining history, science, and legends. Continue to Shaki Waterfall, one of the most beautiful natural attractions in southern Armenia. According to a local legend, the waterfall was formed when a young girl named Shaki leapt from a cliff to escape captivity, and her flowing dress turned into cascading water. Today, the waterfall impresses visitors with its powerful flow and picturesque setting.

Drive to the spa town of Jermuk, located at an altitude of around 2,080 meters above sea level. Known for its healing mineral waters and fresh mountain air, Jermuk has long been a popular destination for wellness and relaxation. Enjoy a short city tour, visiting the famous Jermuk Waterfall, often called “Mermaid’s Hair,” and the Jermuk Mineral Water Gallery, where you can taste natural spring water of different temperatures. Continue to the nearby Jermuk Hot Spring (Geyser), located about 5 km from the town. This natural geothermal site features warm mineral water (around 32°C) with reputed healing properties. The geyser erupts every few minutes, creating a natural “jacuzzi” experience surrounded by mountain landscapes. Short bathing is recommended to fully enjoy the benefits. Drive to Yeghegis.

After breakfast, drive to Artabuynk village, the starting point of today’s scenic hike through the beautiful landscapes of the Vayots Dzor region. Begin your trek towards Tsakhats Qar Monastery (13th century), a peaceful and lesser-visited complex set on a mountain slope, offering stunning views over the surrounding valleys. The site reflects the spiritual and architectural heritage of medieval Armenia. Continue the hike to the impressive Smbataberd Fortress, one of the best-preserved fortresses in Armenia. Perched high on a ridge, the fortress once served as an important defensive stronghold, controlling the trade routes of the region. From here, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Yeghegis valley and the rugged mountains of Vayots Dzor.
