You’ll find your new furry friends here in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive (73km) from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa, which is worth visiting for its culture and architecture alone. Our panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breathtaking and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy. We are open year-round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughout. Self drive to farm or contact Shamarra Alpacas for transport providers.

This experience exceeded our expectations! Our guide provided a ton of interesting information before the animal encounter. We first interacted with the male alpacas. Some were more interested in eating than in people but others were very happy to be petted. Their fur feels like carpet and their eyes are enormous. We moved to the area with females and babies and interacted by feeding them. That certainly got their interest! The farm also has a store with really lovely alpaca wool items.

A huge hit with our 19 month old. The staff was excellent at helping point out the gentlest animals for us to approach who wouldn’t be scared by our son’s predictably unpredictable toddler movements.

Excellent opportunity to get close to Alpacas, it was raining when we arrived but they provided raincoats, good commentary from the staff who explained everything about the alpacas, great fun feeding the females, good views of the Peninsula

Great place for an alpaca farm! Beautiful views. Friendly staff who were very open and happy to answer any and all questions. We had quite a lot of time to pet and feed the alpacas, so this was fully worth it.

The tour consists of 3 ares. The first you get to pet the alpacas, the second you get to see the newborn alpacas but for obvious reasons you’re not allowed to pet them, and in the third area you are given grass in bowls and get to feed them. That was pretty cool the guide Jean was great

If you enjoy animals this is a great experience and the views from the location are stunning! There is a short presentation before going into the areas where the alpacas are located. Then you get to meet the males and the females (separately!). There were two separate tour groups while we were there so it did seem a bit crowded at times but we were still able to have "one on one" time with various alpacas. The staff was great - explaining things and helping take pictures.

One of the highlights of our trip to the South Island. Such a beautiful place, and sooo many alpacas. The people working here were lovely too. Awesome photo opportunity.
