You’ll find your new furry friends here in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive (73km) from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa, which is worth visiting for its culture and architecture alone. Our panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breathtaking and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy. We are open year-round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughout. Self drive to farm or contact Shamarra Alpacas for transport providers.

The tour consists of 3 ares. The first you get to pet the alpacas, the second you get to see the newborn alpacas but for obvious reasons you’re not allowed to pet them, and in the third area you are given grass in bowls and get to feed them. That was pretty cool the guide Jean was great

If you enjoy animals this is a great experience and the views from the location are stunning! There is a short presentation before going into the areas where the alpacas are located. Then you get to meet the males and the females (separately!). There were two separate tour groups while we were there so it did seem a bit crowded at times but we were still able to have "one on one" time with various alpacas. The staff was great - explaining things and helping take pictures.

One of the highlights of our trip to the South Island. Such a beautiful place, and sooo many alpacas. The people working here were lovely too. Awesome photo opportunity.

An superb location for these lovely animals and well informed staff, our guide called I (eye) was very passionate about the alpaca and knew them all even though they have 171 alpacas. The shop was well presented and a good choice of clothing. Highly recommended tour.

This was an amazing experience! The alpacas were soo friendly and even let you sit with them when lying down. You could hand feed them and gaze at the beautiful array of alpaca wool clothing. The visit was around an hour and did time go quickly!!! This experience had a good sized group ( Around 10-18 ) and I would recommend this to families or pretty much everyone!!! There was a introduction to the alpacas ( like how to cuddle and stroke them ) and you could see that the farm win many awards and supreme champions for the spectacular, soft and natural fleece.

The alpacas are very friendly and love to eat. I loved being able to hand feed the baby alpacas. My kids also really enjoyed petting them. The people who worked at the farm were so helpful and informative. Wonderful experience all around.

On a beautiful sunny day in a stunning place what more can you ask for than hanging out with a bunch of gentle teddy bear sheep camels. They really do smile!
