Be prepared for huge crowds. Skip the line still means you wait in line with the other tours and going through each and every museum is very crowded even for us in March. I do still believe it’s a must but just prepare yourself for huge crowds. I am not sure how they let people in or if they even do a count but in my opinion it’s too crowded.

Went on a prebooked tour on 26 March when the weather was atrocious, thunder, lightening and hail. Tip - book when you are in Rome when you know what weather will be like. The crowds were enormous, it seemed as if everyone from all of Rome's outdoor attractions had descended on the Vatican that day. There were queues for everything, and it spoilt the whole tour. I don't know whether the Vatican has any crowd capacity for the museums and Sistine Chapel, but they should have. Everywhere you went you were in someone's way. I felt sorry for the guide, Marco, who seemed stressed and constantly looking for somewhere to get the group out of the stream of humanity! What should have been the highlight of our holiday turned into a 3 hour nightmare of being herded, pushed and shoved from all angles and with few opportunities to rest. I was glad it came to an end in the basilica and it felt like a complete waste of the £175 fee for two people. Despite the magnificent artwork, sculptures and monumental architecture, I could not recommend this trip to anyone.
