Explore breathtaking fjord landscapes and the wildlife of the Arctic while searching for the world’s largest mammal: the whale.

In November to January, the orcas, humpback whales and other whales gather in the fjords close to Alta for their big herring-feast. These gentle giants enjoy their "food platter", and to witness this remarkable sight will give you memories for life.

And this experience does not end here. The area is also home to the Arctic dolphins, the majestic sea eagle, with a wingspan up to 2.5 metres and other seabirds - species.

We use different boats according to the size of the group and the weather conditions, but our local guide will always accompany our group. Under the boat transfer to the hot-spot and in periods when the whales are diving, you can stay inside in the warm cabin and enjoy hot chocolate and snacks.

The boat starting point for this tour can change depending on the location of the whales, but we will transfer you there from your pick up place.

Choose Alta Havn (Alta Harbour) as your pick up place if you are coming to Alta by cruise ship. Our guide will be there looking for you at the parking place with a black minibus.

What To Expect

Alta

After pick up, our guide will take you to our office to inform you about the plans for the day and a little bit about local history and why the whales migrate into the Altafjord. Here you will also have the chance to borrow some warm outdoor clothes. You can leave your personal belongings at the office.

According to where the whales are, we will start the boat tour from one of the harbours in the Altafjord. While driving by the Altafjord, our guide will tell you more about the history of this area. Also the guide will inform about the wildlife, and the types of whales we might see on the tour. You will embarque in an exciting boat tour in the Altafjord searching for wildlife and whales. We will sail for approximatelly 3 hours enjoying the fantastic fjord landscape, and hopefully find whales to observe and photograph.

We had an amazing time with Anders and Steve on the catamaran 2 weeks ago. Even though we couldn’t see any whales (one can’t control nature), we still got the see the beautiful fjords and enjoy Anders’ amazing boat. He’s a great captain, very competent and was driving us for around 4-5 hours and shared his experiences at sea. Steve took care of everyone, geared us up and made sure we all had a great time - which we did, thank you Anders and Steve! Definitely recommended.

It was a wonderful trip! Stig took us far into the fjord and we saw so many orcas and humpback whales. He waited patiently for us to take countless pictures and enjoy the beautiful views. Tasty hot chocolate and pastry was the cherry on top. We still cannot believe how beautiful this was - thank you Stig and Alta Adventures!

Great experience! I recommend without hesitation. The local guide's accounts have not enlivened the journey to the ship. We have spent a very nice day watching a lot of orcas, humpback whales and even some dolphin Thank you so much guys!!!
