We scheduled a private half day birding tour. Robert contacted us days before the tour to introduce himself and confirm the arrangements. I had injured my foot 2 days before the tour and he said he would accomadate and do an easier hike if my injuury was too bad for walking. He checked in with me the next day. I was ok to do the regular tour. Then the weather turned stormy the day before the tour. Robert kept in contact with us, keeping us up to date on conditions and even delayed the start time to hopefully get better weather. Unfortunately, it did not clear up and the tour had to be canceled. He offered to reschedule for the next day. I had previously book another tour so I could not take him up on the offer. I was really looking forward to his tour knowing he was caring, attentive, flexible and accommodating. I would book him again if we come back.

Raoul did a great job leading us on a birding hike at the Monteverde Cloud Forest. We saw many birds including the quetzal. He even got some great bird photos for us through his spotting scope.

I have been birding since I was 11 years old. So I think of myself as experienced. Yet when in Costa Rica, with 933 new species possible, and dense vegetation and steep slopes, knowing where to look and what to look for can be daunting. Of course I will never forget that amazing Resplendent Quetzal feeding it's mate and young at the nest that Robert helped me find. Robert's vast naturalist's knowledge alone made this trip well-worth it for me, but combined with a native's intimate understanding of how to navigate the Costa Rican restaurant and hotel offerings, and with his genuine friendly and careful personality made this entire birding trip unforgettable. With all of the teens along with me, this allowed me to relax and trust that he would take care of us. Still trying to figure out how to get back down there for a repeat!
