We look at adventures in new places as a chance to take in the ambiance and flavor of the culture there. Our searches, with the help of Trip Advisor, never disappoint us. This particular excursion was The Southernmost Food and Cultural Walking Tour. By the end of the tour, we felt like long-term residents of Key West, able to brag on those out of the way spots we visited along our path. It helped that our guide, a true local, lived and worked in Key West. His experiences became our adventure for the day! We started our travels in a local, family-owned restaurant. There, we kicked off our day of walking and tasting with a roast pork asado. The flavor and aroma of the treat placed before us was an amazing hint of our upcoming day! From here, we left on a stroll that would take us to other equally incredible spots. Our first stop was a local Speakeasy and rum bar. Our guide gave us a brief description of the rather checkered past attributed to the location. Not only had the house been a Speakeasy for locals in-the-know, but it also housed a brothel! The brothel has long since relocated and with the end of prohibition, the Speakeasy façade could be redone into a wonderful rum bar, complete with a great veranda. The veranda provided a cool resting place to enjoy a rum runner and watch all the life of Key West wondering up and down the streets. After the refreshing stop and tasty rum runner cocktail, our guide took us through the nearby “Bahama” neighborhood. We walked the tree lined streets and listened to our locally born and raised guide explain the history of the neighborhood and its importance in how Key West had grown up to be what it was today. Our walk through the neighborhood lead us to the requisite Conch fritter stop. The fritters were a great repast after our walk and learn stroll through Key West. So, we had eaten, enjoyed a cocktail, and several quite lively and informative discussions about Key West. As things progressed into the afternoon, our final stop to get a caffeine infusion was at hand. That meant a shot of “Cuban” coffee. What goes great with a Cuban coffee one might ask. Well, of course the answer is Key Lime pie. Every Key West trip involves a piece of Key Lime pie. As mentioned, we find our time is well spent on local food tours with local guides. This excursion was no exception. I highly recommend it!

I was really glad that we booked the Southernmost Food Tour. We ate a lot of food - black beans, rice, pork, onions, Cuban bread, rum punch (I got the no-alcohol version), conch fritters with lime sauce (my favorite), seafood chowder, an amazing jerk mahi mahi over rice, Cuban coffee, and key lime pie. I was pleasantly surprised at the quantity and quality of food offered. Our guide, Mike, was fantastic and easy-going. He was especially mindful of allergies and food preferences, and offered alternatives. All the other folks on our tour were friendly, which made for a fun afternoon!
