Soweto, which stands for South Western Townships, is a large, vibrant township located on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa. Here are some of the things that make Soweto unique:
Rich history: Soweto played a pivotal role in the fight against apartheid. In 1976, student protests that began in Soweto spread throughout the country and became a major turning point in the struggle for racial equality. Soweto is also home to the Hector Pieterson Museum, which commemorates the 1976 uprising, and the Mandela House, where Nelson Mandela lived for many years.

Pastor was an excellent guide, giving us great information but not overwhelming. We stopped several times and he asked each time if we wanted to walk or shop a bit. Overall, the length, pacing, and quality were excellent.

KG gave us a fantastic introduction into the history of South Africa and more specifically Johannesburg. She guided us through Soweto/Johannesburg (joburg/josie) and shared so much knowledge with us. For our first time to South Africa, this was a great way to start the trip!!

Pastor was the guide for our morning tour which took us to Soweto and Old Downtown Johannesburg. He was very informative and it was very interesting to see these areas firsthand and meet some local people. It felt good to be able to support them also in some small way if you choose to. A highlight was the Mandela House where we were shown around by a local tourism student. The Hector Pietersen memorial was also very moving. We really appreciated the benefit of having a private tour as it could be customised to suit our interests. I would highly recommend this tour if you are interested in seeing another side of Johannesburg.
