Historical Significance:
The St Kitts Scenic Railway tour is a narrow gauge railway that was originally built in the early 20th century to transport sugarcane from the island's plantation to the sugar factory.
Scenic Route: The train follows a 30-mile circular radius around the island providing passengers with picturesque villages, stunning views of lush rainforests, views of urban and rural areas, lush landscaping of farming, and the different livestock that seem to freely roam the island.
Double decks: The train provides two levels. The upper-level has open-air seating and the bottom with air-conditioning. Passengers have the opportunity to sit inside or enjoy the fresh air and panoramic views from the top deck

St. Kitts
Let's begin an exhilarating experience by sitting on the top open-air section of the train (the bottom is enclosed and air-conditioned). Originally built between 1912 and 1926 to deliver sugar cane from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre, the "Last Railway in the West Indies" now provides a fascinating way for visitors to see the island from the comfort of modern passenger train cars and sightseeing buses. As the train begins to chug out of the station you begin to be treated to stunning vistas of the island's dramatic coastline and rolling hills. As the train hugs the railway into the Northeastern coastline spectacular vistas of the ocean, surf, cliffs, and lush vegetation surround you. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning deep "ghuts", or canyons, and winds through small villages and farms. Dark green rainforests are skirted by rippling fields of remnant sugar cane fields with the volcanic cone of Mt. Liamuiga rising above the railway.

4.00Make sure you sit on the left side or the seat at the back of the car that goes across. All water views are on the left. Hard to take pictures on the right side without standing up.

2.00I selected the optio for pickup at hotel, and the driver arrived early and was courteous. We boarded the train early and another couple and us were the only ones sitting in the car. We waited about fifteen minutes for the cruise ship passengers to arrive and they filled the rest of the car. We soon realized you can't see much from the car and asked one of the attendants if we could move up to the top seating. She said no and offered no reason why. When we arrived, nobody seemed to know what to do with those not from the cruise ship. The only food was a tiny little cookie, although there was plenty of drinks.

5.00The train was a fun ride. It was a good way to see the countryside and learn some history of St Kitts. We rode in the open air top part of the car, the lower part was enclosed and air conditioned. We were fortunate not to have rain, and the constant breeze kept us comfortable. The beverages served were tasty, and the dancers were an entertaining surprise. The busses to and from the train itsaelf were comfortable and efficient.

5.00This was a great tour. We saw community life from the van that picked us up from the port and the outer edges of St. Kitts from the train. They were very generous with the rum on the train. The dancers were a nice touch on the train.

2.00Train left very late as it’s dependent on the cruise ship coming in. As they know the cruise ship timetables, this could be better. Audio isn’t very good for the tour. Service on board was good with attentive and friendly staff. The local dancers looked like they hated their jobs and it didn’t feel authentic. Bus journey at the end was cramped.

5.00We took this from a cruise ship (make sure you're set to get back well before all-aboard time). We ended up having several passengers who booked an excursion through the cruise line with us, so we weren't worried about getting back to the ship on time. This tour includes a drive to and from the train back to the cruise terminal, which was well organized and very convenient. The train itself was excellent, lots of fun, great views, and complementary drinks and snack. Be sure to sit on the top level! The train does sway quite a bit since it's a narrow-gauge track, but it's perfectly safe. It was a great way to experience St. Kitts. Everyone felt authentic and lovely! I would highly recommend this tour to friends and family.
