Dublin Castle

Exterior of Dublin Castle is not just a castle—it’s a storybook of Ireland’s complex and layered past. Built in the early 13th century on the site of a Viking settlement, it originally served as a defensive fortification. Over the centuries, it transformed into the seat of English, and later British, rule in Ireland for over 900 years. The castle was the heart of British administration in Ireland until 1922, when it was handed over to the new Irish Free State following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Today, it functions as a government complex, a venue for state functions, and a major tourist attraction.

Marty was awesome! Incredibly knowledgeable and personable. It’s a great way to learn about Dublin from someone that truly loves and appreciates the city. I enjoyed all the extra knowledge we gleaned from our guide as we walked through downtown Dublin. I know we learned much more about everything with our guide vs a self guided audio tour.

Marty was a very sweet, humble and knowledgable guide. What his brain holds in history is miraculous, he brings you back to that time and interacts with you- gets to know you by first name which we love. You’re not just a number, he would check in on you and make you feel so welcome. A little mishap at the start as our original meeting point was changed, and it never updated on the Viator app, but we called the organizer and he was quick to help, apologized and Marty waited for us and was understanding. I guess when it was originally booked in 2025 it was at a certain meeting point and then all bookings from 2026 on was a different. Not the end of the world!! It all worked out :)
