Dihua Street

The experience begins in the heart of old Taipei, along Dihua Street, where centuries of trade, culture, and street food come together in one vibrant stretch. Right from the start, we dive straight into local flavors to sample a plethora of iconic Taiwanese bites like pig’s blood cake (豬血糕), a chewy sweet-savory street snack loved by locals, and a comforting bowl of braised pork rice (滷肉飯), often considered Taiwan’s ultimate soul food. To balance it all, we’ll cool down with a refreshing cup of herbal grass tea (青草茶), a traditional drink rooted in Chinese medicinal culture.

We had a very nice guide and got on well with him. His English was perfect and he was very personable. We were the only two people on this tour, but this was not a problem. On balance,it was not good value. The itinerary was not very interesting, visiting some small vendors that offered foods, such as "stinky tofu" that were not likely to be to the taste of western visitors. There was only one drink on the whole three hour tour and the temperature was 30+ degrees. I think that the advertising and the price build expectations that were not met. By comparison,my wife and I ate in a top quality, beautiful teppanyaki restaurant the night before for little more than the cost of this tour. I think the tour needs to be rethought.

Dave was an excellent tour guide and very knowledgeable about where he took us. We would recommend this tour and the areas he took us too. My only improvement could be for some more meal type restaurants as opposed to the sweeter snacks. Overall good experience though.

Definitely take this tour! Dave was a super knowledgeable guide that actually did all the research to put the tour together. Everything we ate was delicious and had a story behind it. Plus the neighborhood has so much history and Dave integrated interesting facts that made me appreciate the experience so much more!

Taipei’s food scene is a labyrinth, but exploring it with Dave felt like having a backstage pass to the city’s heart. If you are looking for the typical tourist traps, this isn't the tour for you—and that is exactly why it was so incredible. Why This Tour Stands Out • The "Secret Menu" of Taipei: Dave steered us completely away from the mainstream, neon-lit paths. We found ourselves in quiet, localized pockets where the cultural environment felt lived-in and authentic. • Food with Context: This wasn't just a tasting session; it was a history lesson you could eat. Dave has a gift for weaving the complex threads of Taiwan’s history directly into the story of the dishes. Culinary Highlights • Adventurous Eats: We had the chance to try pig’s blood cake, which was such an interesting delicacy. It was a highlight for me, and I actually really enjoyed the unique texture. • Local Favorites: The oyster fritter was absolutely delicious—perfectly crispy and clearly a neighborhood staple. A Perfect Finish The tour ended with a wonderful surprise: a local pineapple cake paired with a nip of Kinmen Kaoliang liquor. It was the perfect "sweet and strong" conclusion to the day, offering a final taste of the island's traditions. Final Verdict: The way Dave connects the evolution of local ingredients to the historical shifts in the neighborhood was fascinating. If you want to skip the crowds and dive deep into the soul of Taiwan through its flavors, book with Dave. It is an authentic, thoughtful, and delicious deep dive into the real Taipei. I would 100% take another food tour with Dave.
