Climbing Kilimanjaro via Machame is very scenic but slightly challenging. Often called the Whiskey Route this is a scenically beautiful trail, longer and much gentler than Umbwe or Marangu. Despite being a tough climb compared to the Marangu route, the Machame route has one of the highest summit success rates given the topography of the route which allows climbers to “trek high & sleep low” hence making it a more favorable route for acclimatization. This hike takes 6 Days although an extra day at Shira or Karanga valley is recommended for better acclimation. This route is much quiter route as opposed to Marangu and involves a rather gradual ascent unlike that on Umbwe Route. The walking is rather tiring. However, our itinerary is designed to provide valuable acclimatization by having shorter walking days during the trek.

A friend of mine did a Tarangire safari with Rafael and it was a very good experience. We were able to get great views of the elephants up close and had expert knowledge from Rafael and the driver. Both of them speak good English and we had no trouble in communicating at all. They provided hearty lunches and plentiful water. They even had electrical outlets in the safari to keep our phones charged. Kilimanjaro was a similar experience. There is a lot of food that they carry for the trek. We had to ask the chef to stop cooking so much! He would cook a lot of variety every day and we would be unable to eat it all. Rafael and is porters are experts on Kili and know the route and flora fauna in detail. They purify water and made sure to show us the water purification tablets. Public bathrooms in camps are really gross due to no flush. Rafael carries his own bathroom tent and has a very hygienic and clean bathroom setup. It is very clean. Looking back at the bathroom situation now, I would not go without private bathroom tent. We only had to carry very minimal items in our backpack like water, snacks, jacket, etc. Porters even offered to carry that for us but I wanted to carry a little weight to get a full experience and train for other hikes. They take SPO2 readings daily and keep track of it along with other daily health questions like appetite, headaches, etc. Porters are well taken care of and seemed happy to be with Rafael. I would to hesitate to choose three peaks for anything in Tanzania. They are a new company so they are willing to go the extra mile to get good reviews and business from outside.
