this sprawling maze of ancient streets and alleys is one of North Africa's most impressive medieval medinas and one of Tunisia's great treasures. It's home to numerous covered souks selling everything from shoes to shisha, as well as bustling cafes, alleyways full of artisans at work, and residential areas punctuated by large, brightly painted doorways. Historic palaces, hammams, mosques and madrassas (schools for the study of the Koran) are scattered throughout, many are richly decorated with tiles, carved stucco and marble columns.

The Great Mosque of Kairouan

The Great Mosque is the symbol of Kairouan. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful mosques in the world, one of the most impressive monuments in the whole Maghreb! Its religious prestige makes Kairouan the 4th holiest city in Islam. We admire its imposing minaret, its majestic courtyard with impressive dimensions, surrounded by superbly designed arcades and sheltering a sundial, and the high doors of richly carved cedar wood. They open onto the prayer rooms, adorned with dozens of marble columns. Built in 670, this architectural masterpiece, whose appearance evokes an adobe fortress, inspired other mosques in the Maghreb.

The museum was built on the site of a Roman villa whose spatial organization it restores: a central courtyard surrounded by a peristyle – courtyard – which gives access to the rooms. There are exhibited objects – sculptures, mosaic paintings, ceramics, etc. – from excavation campaigns carried out at Thysdrus as well as in the vicinity of the city

  • Very nice exposure to Tunisia

    - Review from Viator

Of course, with three days, some sites were clearly better than others. We saw everything on the itinerary that we wished to. A couple of my favorites were Carthage, the Bassins Aghlabites, of course, the colosseum (in great condition), Ribat of Monastir and a number of medinas. The other sites were interesting as well. A fair bit of time in the car (road trip) and I felt the car was a bit small given the distance travelled. AC did not work first two days but it worked fine on day three when temperature was over 100F. If you want good exposure to Tunisia, this is a good one and not too much difficult walking. Very knowledgeable guide.

I did the 3 day best of Tunisia tour. It was fantastic! The guide was knowledgeable, the driver was wonderful, they showed up on time, spoke fluent English (both the driver and the guide) and it was very well-paced. The driving distances were manageable and it was the perfect amount of touring. It also included delicious lunches in local restaurants and not tourist traps. Highly recommend.

  • An outstanding tour in a welcoming country.

This was an outstanding tour. It was very well organised. Fame and Saaed were on time every day. Fame shared his pride and wealth of knowledge about his country. The lunches were excellent and highlighted the food of different regions. Thoughtful little morning tea treats were provided and were also typically Tunisian and timely. Fame and Saaed demonstrated a good working relationship which was fun. We laughed a lot over the three days and I learned a great deal about the culture and history of this wonderful country. I highly recommend this tour and urge you to ask for Fame and Saeed.

Thank you Didon Tour for making my first trip to Tunisia wonderful. I got 3 different tour guides for each day and all spoke English well and all the tour guides were knowledgeable and answered my answers. Here is the itinerary and some travel tips to Tunisia. Day 1: - Medina of Tunis - Lunch (included) - Ruins of Carthage - Sisi Bousaid Day 2: - Kairouan area to include the basin and Medina of Kairouan - El Jem Colossoeum and museum - Expect 2 to 3 hours drive from Tunis this day. Day 3: - Takrouan area to meet some Berber Tribe people - Forte El Ribat - Medina of Sousse Best Medina in my opinion. More shopping stalls in this one than the other two. Notes/Tips: - All day tours from 0830 to 1630 depending on your speed of walk and how much you want to see or shop. The tour guide adjusted the times to me, if I wanted to spend more or less time in an area. - To see all the ruin of Carthage takes possibly a half day but the most you will get will be 20-30 minutes on the first day. - Wear comfortable walking shoes. - Expect long rides and traffic in Tunisia. - If you take the yellow taxis here, ensure they use the meter, not quote you some prices. - This was a good cultural and historical tour. Not too strenuous but not wheelchair accessible. I recommend using this tour company. They took care of me well as a solo female traveler.
