A professional English speaking tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the
killing fields of Choeung Ek Genocide Center – 9 miles away south of Phnom Penh. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a
Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rouge, lead by Pol Pot, turned the place into
what became known as the killing fields, where they executed around 20.000 victim. Over three years they massacred and
buried 2.5 million people. After remembering the dead, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Meaning hill of the poisonous trees, Pol Pot turned a once popular
high school into a high security prison. 20,000 people were imprisoned
there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today it serves as a
museum and a reminder of darker days.

Tour was well organised and pickup time was kept updated via whatsapp so no waiting around. Visal was incredibly informative about the harrowing history of khmer rouge and spoke great english. A difficult but must do experience and Visal made understanding the lead up the the genocide much easier.

Excellent communication with Vidal the your operator from he start, picked up on time, I was late and he waited. The tour is sad but so insightful, unbelievable how this went on not very long ago, the tour guide Miss Chesna was very knowledgeable and you could see the effect these effects had on her and the people of Cambodia, it’s a must visit and pay your respects.

This visit is not “enjoyable”; you come face to face with an inhumane, unspeakably brutal, and systematically executed atrocity inflicted on the Cambodian people. As children in Turkey, we used to hear on the radio about the Khmer Rouge regime and what happened, but I don’t think I ever imagined it as such a machine of terror and annihilation. What makes such a catastrophe possible is not only individuals, but also the doctrine and propaganda apparatus that devalues human life and treats “anything as acceptable for the cause.” Thank you to our guide, Mr. Baboon, for explaining this painful subject in a respectful and balanced way.

Baboon was our guide. He was excellent. Very knowledgeable. His personal perspectives, stories and thorough factual information added insight into the horrors of the Khmer Rouge occupation of Cambodia. The Killing Fields and the museum were disturbing and thought provoking. It is a must see if you visit Phnom Penh.
