Explore the magnificent lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir, one of the longest and best-known lava tubes in Iceland. Located just 30-40 minutes from Reykjavík, the tunnel is easily accessible year round. Discover the inner workings of a volcanic eruption and walk along the path where lava flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred approximately 5200 years ago. Our tour is approximately one hour whereas platforms and lights have been incorporated - making the experience of visiting the cave simply breathtaking. The tour includes all necessary equipment. Choose your preferred departure time upon booking. Please note that this tour does not include pick up and is for self driving passengers only.

What To Expect
Explore the magnificent lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir, one of the longest and best-known lava tubes in Iceland. Discover the inner workings of a volcanic eruption and walk along the path where lava flowed underground during the Leitahraun eruption over 5000 years ago. Our tour is approximately one hour whereas platforms and lights have been incorporated - making the experience of visiting the cave simply breathtaking. The tour difficulty is rated as easy, although guests need to walk over uneven surfaces and up and down stairs. Helmets and headlamps are provided and the guests go in a group with an English speaking guide who provides information about the unique geological features inside the Tunnel.

5.00We visited the Lava Tunnel as a family and were absolutely delighted. The tour is impressive and at the same time very suitable for families. Our child was totally fascinated by walking through the tunnel and discovering the different colors and shapes of the lava rock – it really feels a bit like another world. The guides were very friendly, explained everything understandably and took a lot of time for questions. The organization was perfect, the equipment good and we felt safe at all times. A great experience to see Iceland's volcanic landscape from the inside. We would do the tour again at any time and can highly recommend it especially to families!

5.00My daughter and I had a wonderful time. Liam was our guide and very knowledgeable, ask a question and he’s got your answer - studied up in environmental studies in Canada and masters in Iceland. We were very fortunate but Liam had some extra time and took four of us for a bit of an extended tour which was astonishing - really experienced the snake of small tunnels and got our masters degree in lava. Can’t thank Liam enough for being so generous with his time and knowledge.

5.00We had a great time and tour done by Dimitri. The cave was a great way to see the lave stone. The tour guide was funny and provided a lot of information and history of Iceland and its volcanoes. A very short guided hike and easy to walk through!

5.00Terrific experience led by a knowledgeable and entertaining guide. Good value for the money. Highly recommend the evening tour and the chance to glimpse Northern Lights via the tunnel's "skylights" (which sadly were not visible due to weather.) Delightful way to spend a stormy evening.
