Explore the magnificent lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir, one of the longest and best-known lava tubes in Iceland. Located just 30-40 minutes from Reykjavík, the tunnel is easily accessible year round. Discover the inner workings of a volcanic eruption and walk along the path where lava flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred approximately 5200 years ago. Our tour is approximately one hour whereas platforms and lights have been incorporated - making the experience of visiting the cave simply breathtaking. The tour includes all necessary equipment. Choose your preferred departure time upon booking. Please note that this tour does not include pick up and is for self driving passengers only.

What To Expect
Explore the magnificent lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir, one of the longest and best-known lava tubes in Iceland. Discover the inner workings of a volcanic eruption and walk along the path where lava flowed underground during the Leitahraun eruption over 5000 years ago. Our tour is approximately one hour whereas platforms and lights have been incorporated - making the experience of visiting the cave simply breathtaking. The tour difficulty is rated as easy, although guests need to walk over uneven surfaces and up and down stairs. Helmets and headlamps are provided and the guests go in a group with an English speaking guide who provides information about the unique geological features inside the Tunnel.

4.00We drove to the location and just bought tickets. It was fairly busy, but within 20 minutes we were kitted out and had a designated tour leader. It can be a little slippery and I suppose a bit of a challenge if you're not too ambulant. Initially I thought it was a bit expensive for such a short tunnel, but it went on and on. I think we were in the about an hour and half. The guide was very professional, providing explanations to how the tunnels were formed and answering any questions

5.00Stunning experience learning about the history of the Lava tunnel and how it was formed. Jona was extremely knowledgeable and added lots of humour on the tour. The tunnels were even more beautiful with the natural snow and ice formations. I doubt I will ever experience true darkness again - definitely a highlight of the tour.

5.00I visited the Lava Tunnel - Raufarhólshelli - as part of a group from the School of Travel and Tourism and the experience was great. The walk through the tunnel was breathtaking; the colors are stunning - the geological formations amazing - and the information and stories provided by the guide made the environment come alive. I highly recommend this tour!

5.00Nice and fun stop, takes about an hour to see the lava tunnel. It is interesting, followed with funny stories by the tour guide. It is not expensive, def worth a visit, fun for adults and kids. We went with teenage boys.
