Greyfriars
We begin our tour in the city's historic Greyfriars Kirkyard where JK Rowling spent a lot of time while writing the books. Here we'll see several names on gravestones that inspired characters in the series including William McGonagall and Thomas Riddell. From here we will also see two potential inspirations for Hogwarts in the form of George Heriot's School and Edinburgh Castle.
An area of the city named after Harry Potter? Surely not! See the place where she wrote much of the first book from here.
Guide
Please bring something that you can use as a wand. This can be anything roughly wand shaped - a pen or umbrella will work well!

The guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and fun. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours. Although it was relatively short, it was very informative and well worth it.

My guide, Charlie, was wonderful. A great walking tour to see and learn about some of the places and names around the beautiful city of Edinburgh that inspired JK Rowling when she was writing the Harry Potter books. Highly recommend this tour.

Wizard Stu made our Potter Trail absolutely magical! His storytelling was witty, engaging, and full of fascinating behind-the-scenes details that brought both Edinburgh and the wizarding world to life. He struck the perfect balance between humor, history, and Harry Potter trivia, keeping everyone—from devoted fans to casual companions—thoroughly entertained. If you're looking for a fun, interactive, and memorable way to explore Edinburgh, Wizard Stu is the guide you want. Just don't be surprised if you leave wondering whether he actually graduated from Hogwarts.
