We had high hopes for this tour after reading the reviews, but it was a disappointing experience start to finish. Our group of seven was told the tour would cap at ten people. We ended up with twelve. When we asked about it, our guide brushed it off and said he’d address it later, which became a theme. Any time someone in the group asked a question, the response was “I’ll answer that later,” and later never came. It made for a frustrating, one-sided experience where curiosity was essentially penalized. The two restaurants we visited felt like tourist traps. Nothing wrong with the food on a technical level, but nothing memorable either. After two weeks in Japan eating at genuinely excellent spots we found on our own, this felt like a step backward. The bigger issue was the guide’s attitude. He spent a fair amount of time talking down to the group and making broad, condescending comments about Americans not knowing how to eat Japanese food properly. Our group are all well-traveled, and several of us have been to Japan before. We didn’t need a lecture. We needed a guide. We left before the tour wrapped up. I noticed the rave reviews and honestly think they’re coming from people who haven’t traveled much and are wowed by anything international. For experienced travelers, this tour offers very little and the group cap issue alone is a reason to look elsewhere.

Thevyour operator had not checked in advance regarding food allergies/ tolerances unlike other good yours in other countries where we were asked in advance . So we were asked at the beginning of the tour and the guide said she is not sure it could be accommodated and we might have to go get our own food for the first course. Eventually the restaurant could adapt but it was a last minute action. As well, the tour price was very expensive for only three stops with the last stop being in a food hall of a department store. Finally. the tour guide did not keep a customer count and four of the guests went missing when we changed location for the dessert course.

I thought I would take a punt and partake in a food tasting tour to see if I would have my knowledge of local food expanded. I wasn't really disappointed, as a local guide picked the choices in both restaurants. Looking back, I should have just stuck with a free walking tour of Tsujiki market, where the variety of food was much greater, and probably spent the same. I found that sitting in 2 restaurants, and having forced conversation with complete strangers was quite stressful. I'm not sure the guide truly engaged in the subject of the food or the establishments' history. Time was unnecessarily filled in so that we could get to the restaurant in the allotted time, and then made to feel rushed, because the table was booked for another party. The tour was cut short at the end, once the dessert was handed out. On reflection, my advice is don't bother with this, and get a more authentic experience by taking one of the free tours of the fish market, where you can sample as much or as little as you please.

The tour was not as advertised. Instead of 4 hours it was 2.5 hours with just 2 eateries. However our guide was nice. I would not recommend this tour.
