The tour guide is a very nice lady, truth is she hardly speaks English, how does one expect her to articulate the local food culture? It seems Viator just contracted a random tour guide who is not trained nor qualified to serve as a food tour guide. She just walked us around bought us food, does that not sound like something you could very well do by yourself? We have found our way from California to Tokyo fish market, don't you think we are fully capable of walking the fish market and buy our own food? We do not need an escort we need someone to give us nuanced local tidbits, give us some eclectic/special local food, educate/show us local food culture/customs, etc. There are so many interesting food items peculiarly Japanese which we would love to be educated on, but this definitely is an opportunity missed. Aside from the wagyu beef and otoro/toro sashimi, the quality of food was sub par. We felt like some stupid tourists who have been duped into paying lots of $ for nothing. We feel bad leaving a bad review because she is a very nice lady. We paid $ for a specific purpose, we certainly did not get what we paid for. We travel frequently this by far is the worst guide experience we had.

Informative and fun tour. Sochi our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and a pleasure to follow through the markets. I highly recommend her. The food culture was great. Visits to the Tsukigi Hongan-Ji Temple and a Shinto Shrine and lessons on their traditions were a bonus. Make sure that you come to this tour hungry!

Kenji did an amazing job explaining the history of this bustling market and the types of products available at different stores. With an overwhelming number of foods to choose from, I definitely appreciated having Kenji to pick out many delicious foods to sample. The tour lasted a little over 2 hours. There is a lot of food so I advise showing up with an empty stomach.

Akiko was a warm, considerate, generous, funny, informative, experienced and kind tour guide—one of the very best we’ve ever had. She took us to the Tsukiji Shrine first, then through the market where she skillfully navigated us through a very thick crowd, always finding us comfortable places to eat astonishingly good food. My favorite was tasting dozens of tiny snacks—codfish with lemon, dried kelp, wasabi sesame seeds, etc at half a dozen stalls—we bought bags of snacks to bring home. She had prepared laminated cards to teach about wagyu beef, and Japanese etiquette when dining and particularly when eating sushi. She also treated us to coffee when we ran slightly ahead of our sushi reservation—a tiny back of the store coffee bar. We learned so much, tasted extraordinary food, learned about the life of both the outer and inner market, felt like we had made a new friend, and left with several handmade gifts that she had prepared for us. We will ever forget this lovely experience, the highlight of our three days in Tokyo.

Aki was very knowledgeable and gave great descriptions of the different areas of the market. I felt like we had a couple of good rest stops with restrooms. she was able to explain fun aspects of some of the different foods.
