Our Tongariro River expedition offers a unique blend of excitement and accessibility. Perfect for first-time rafters, the grade 3 rapids promise thrills and spills without the need for prior experience. Brace yourself as your pulse races and your senses are inundated with the sheer awesomeness of the journey.
In the midst of thundering waters, surrounded only by your fellow adventurers, you'll discover the addictive allure of white water rafting firsthand.
But the adventure doesn't end there. Paddle through the picturesque landscapes of the Great Lake Taupō region, where towering pine forests, native bush, and volcanic cliffs form the backdrop to your journey. Keep your eyes peeled for rare sightings of Whio, the endangered blue ducks, nesting along the river banks, and marvel at the colossal New Zealand trout gliding beneath you – some so large they've been known to snack on a passing mouse or two!

What To Expect
You'll meet at the Rafting Centre and get kitted out in all the gear you need for rafting, all you need to bring is swimsuit, towel and any kind of emergency medication including but not limited to asthma inhaler, epi pen, heart medication etc We supply helmets, wetsuits, (gloves, fleece and boots in winter) and provide an in-depth safety briefing before we drive to the entry point on the river. Once we're on the river, we'll navigate 14kms of the Tongariro River which includes approximately 60 different rapids. You'll be shown how to paddle and your guide will provide instructions the whole way to ensure you're comfortable, safe and having a fabulous time. At the end of the trip, you'll be transported back to the Rafting Centre to get changed, take a look at the video and photos taken and swap notes with your new rafting friends.

5.00What a ride ! We booked a couple of days before we were going to be in the area and had a spare morning - what a ride, absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. All equipment provided, river conditions were great (but apparently they always are) and we had a really good captain that took us through all the rapids. We loved it and would highly recommend.

5.00We had a brilliant afternoon rafting on the Tongariro River. Stefan, our guide and instructor made it a fun experience for the group. We always felt safe in his leadership. He was ably assisted by driver and photographer Sarah. The team at Tongariro were very friendly and helpful. I would 100% recommend a visit.

5.00One of the most amazing things I've ever done. With no previous experience, it was fun (and a bit physical) but with a very skilled guide, also safe. Rafting through inaccessible waterways meant all the stunning scenery and birdlife were on display. All equipment was supplied, just bring a towel and bathers; there's even an opportunity for a swim in the besutiful water during the trip!

5.00Me and my husband booked this for our New Zealand trip after being recommended by friends who had also booked this adventure after visiting in 2023! Honestly it was amazing, like something out of Jurassic park! The river is only accessible at the start via helicopter or boat and it was beautiful! The instructors were so experienced (Julie was ours) and we had the best day! Thank you - would recommend to anyone - we had never been white water rafting before!

5.00We had a brilliant time white water rafting with Tongariro River Rafting. Julie was our expert guide for around two hours on the river, and we felt completely confident in her skill and experience from the very start. She made the whole trip fun, safe and engaging. From the initial booking through to the farewell at the end, everything was friendly, well organised and highly professional. The entire operation runs seamlessly, which really adds to the experience. The rafting itself is suitable for most people, as long as you listen carefully and follow the guide’s instructions. There’s even an opportunity for a refreshing swim along the way. The water is crystal clear and the scenery is absolutely stunning. We had such a fantastic time and would thoroughly recommend this experience to anyone visiting the area.
