It’s a must to take the train to see the beautiful and rugged mountains, hills, valleys, rivers and waterfalls in the comfort of luxurious train carriages with other fellow travellers from all over the world.

The train was delayed on departing by 20 minutes but no announcements were made. Anyhow, the train was clean and staff very friendly. The views were super in some places though the plains were much of a muchness. FWIW: we did make up some time but stopped two stops before Christchurch to let a passenger alight and the we sat for almost 15 minutes before moving off again. Once moving an announcement was made that a “problem stick” had caused the delay. Didn’t feel too professional from that point of view.

The trip itself cannot be faulted. I would just like to warn others that if your journey is cancelled at the last minute on behalf of the tour company, opt for a full refund. Sadly we didn’t and were disappointed not to be allocated forward facing seats that we had originally booked months before travelling. Our whole first class experience that was very expensive was ruined by travelling in our seats against the direction of travel. What has made this an even worse experience is the customer service of this company is appalling suggesting we should claim for our disappointment through any travel insurance we may have! Bottom line - go for a refund and rebook choosing your seats. Sadly we thought we would have been better taken care of.

What an amazing experience !! Worked like clock work 😊 with easy to board, staff were great! We did the lunch and train ride and were fortunate enough to have a lovely UK couple share the table we were on. The food was fantastic!! We thought it was just lunch but you get a lovely A la carte menu which also includes a light breakfast which was totally delicious with drinks being alcohol and juices or cool drinks and coffee and teas. We would definitely do it again! You won’t be disappointed!! 😊😊

We felt that it lacked the personal commentary of the different areas that we were passing through. Overall a very good scenic journey through the wilderness of the South Island

A great experience and well worth the trip to see all the beautiful South Island scenery enroute. Friendly helpful safe who kept the train spotlessly clean for the entire trip

This is a BUCKET LIST experience. A fantastic journey with jaw dropping views. The staff were really good. The viewing carriages were great but got busy (max occupancy 20 people): wish we’d looked at booking the upper class so we could have more space in the viewing carriage. The buffet car was good but could have used more coffee machines/staff as at times the wait for service was long. The luggage management was excellent.
