The journey from Christchurch to Greymouth was lovely. A brief stop at Arthurs Pass. The area around Moana and Lake Brunner was particularly stunning. The staff were great and we even got a wave goodbye from the platform. Next time, I might try the Scenic carriage which appears to be a fine dining experience. I was unaware of this option when I booked and was only offered what seems to have been a more expensive ticket an than one economy may have been - but then again, the scenic carriage may be even more overpriced for a five hour train trip. But overall, a great experience.

The train accommodations were very comfortable and permitted outstanding viewing opportunities, particularly the "open car" area. The food from the cafe was very good and we appreciated the dairy-free and gluten-free options. I suspect this experience would be even more stunning in the winter.

Well organized. comfortable seats. Views from several platforms within the train. Plenty of room. Good food available. A really great trip. A must do.

There wasn’t one the whole journey was just great. one small downside — a seat facing backwards isn’t that great on a trip like that!

We had lovely weather on our Tranz Alpine trip the day we went which meant we got some great photos. The most disappointing thing was the only commentary you got was through an APP you downloaded, spent 30 minutes trying to operate only to find it was not working. Given the average age of the passengers is 65+, I feel it would be much appreciated to have a running commentary through a PA system as the train is a tourist operation, not a commuter train. It would be preferable to have someone with a Kiwi accent that we can understand. As a consequence we missed all the history of the area and the building of the tracks, etc. And we were lucky, we had young millennials sitting opposite us who discovered the APP was not working after the 30 minutes
