The archeological site of Tulum, an ancient Mayan port overlooking the crystal waters of the Caribbean, is a must-see on a visit to the Yucatan. Enjoy a detailed historical tour just as the site opens, when it is virtually empty and the morning light over the ocean is a treat.

We follow up with a visit to an exclusive cenote hidden in the jungle. This is an incredible insight into the underground world of the peninsula, where we walk, wade and swim in the clearest of waters, surrounded on all sides by the wondrous limestone formations that create beautiful textures in the rock. A close-up and exclusive experience of the unique environment of the underground rivers will leave you with a lasting impression of this magical world. The open sink hole in the middle of a labyrinthine cavern and the winding paths that lead us to it will delight your senses.

  • An outstanding experience for first time travelers

We took the private Mayan Underworld tour with our college-aged daughter and her friend during our first trip to Mexico. While most of our time was spent relaxing at our resort in Riviera Maya—by the pools and beach with books and cocktails—we wanted one excursion that would give us a meaningful introduction to the region. We specifically chose a private tour to avoid crowds and the feeling of being rushed, and this experience delivered exactly what we were hoping for. While I don’t have a comparison point, I would highly recommend this tour—especially for first-time visitors. Niko was our driver and guide, and he was outstanding. Every aspect of the day—from booking to pickup, guiding at each stop, lunch, and drop-off—was seamless and thoughtfully handled. The day began with an on-time, accommodating pickup at our resort, followed by a smooth drive through morning traffic to Tulum in a clean, comfortable, and well-maintained vehicle. We stopped for coffee upon arrival and then headed into the archaeological park (with parking and admission included). Niko guided us through the major sites with clear, engaging, and well-informed commentary. Next, we went snorkeling in Akumal. Rather than the most crowded areas, Niko took us to a quieter, protected inlet with rocks and coves and a nice diversity of fish. Unfortunately, the weather cut this portion short due to thunder and lightning, but we appreciated the location—it felt safe, manageable, and not overly crowded. Snorkeling equipment and flotation vests were provided. Our final stop was a semi-private cenote about 20 minutes inland. For roughly 90 minutes, we had the cave entirely to ourselves. This was a highlight of the day. Niko guided us through with great care, explaining both the geology and the significance of cenotes in Mayan culture, and even pointing out bat habitats along the way. We walked about half a mile through waist-deep water before reaching an open cenote approximately nine feet deep, where we swam and enjoyed a rope swing. We exited via a short, scenic walk. The day ended with an excellent lunch at a small restaurant in Akumal (included in the tour), followed by a comfortable return to our resort. Overall, this was a beautifully paced, well-organized, and memorable experience. We felt taken care of at every step and came away with a much deeper appreciation for the region. Highly recommended. This time of year, we did not suffer from the mosquitos (though we were prepared!!). Advice-bring cash. Paying the balance of the tour, providing a tip for the driver, and having beer and margaritas at lunch require cash. We had both pesos and US dollars. Also, we wore our bathing suits under our clothes, and brought towels, which made it easier to transition from the ruins to the snorkeling. We did change at the restaurant, though it is very much a beach town restaurant and we would have been fine staying in our suits with a coverup had we wanted.

  • Incredible day with Paloma

Me, my husband and our two kids (6 and 9) recently returned from the Yucatan. We spent about half of our time in Telum. By far, the high point of our trip was the tour we did with MexicoKanTours, our guide Paloma and our driver, Axel. Axel and Paloma picked us up promptly from our hotel at 8am. They were immediately welcoming to our entire family (the youngest of which were a bit grumpy about our early departure due). We drove to the ruins and on the way, Paloma explained some of the history of the indigenous people. We toured the ruins for about an hour – and throughout the tour, Paloma was very attentive to each of us (making sure we used the bathrooms when we had the chance, offering water, suggesting photo opportunities and indulging my 6 year-old’s preoccupation with the iguanas.) It was exactly the right speed for my family. We learned a lot about Telum (“Zama”) and were also allowed the space and time to take in and enjoy the stunning scenery. From there we traveled to a cenote. Our experience at the cenote was nothing short of spectacular. Again, on the ride there, Paloma described the different types of cenotes in the area and showed us pictures of the birds and other animals who live in the area. It is hard to describe our experience at the cenote itself because it was incredibly special. The cenote itself has a certain spiritual quality but it was also the way that Paloma led us through the cenote that allowed us to attune to this wonder of our natural world. We swam and played in the crystal blue water of the Cenote before we headed back to the van. We finished with a delicious lunch where we had the chance to chat a bit with Paloma. We were a week in the area but somehow, the half-day we spent with Paloma and Axel will be what we all think of when we think about this trip. Thank you, Paloma.

We booked the bike tour and it turned into a private tour as there were only two of us. Our guide, Alondra was really exceptional. She was really erudite and with good contagious energy. Couldn't have been better. The tour itself was really well thought out and easy to do by bike, our guide made the experience unforgettable. Thank you!!

  • Unforgettable Adventure – A Must-Do in Mexico!

From start to finish, this private tour was absolutely incredible! Our guide, Alondra, and driver, Victor, went above and beyond to make this an unforgettable experience for our group of 16. We started with a visit to the breathtaking Mayan ruins in Tulum, where Alondra shared fascinating history and insights about Mayan culture during the ride. Her knowledge and passion truly brought the ruins to life. Next, we explored a private Cenote, where we hiked through an underground cave river—an exhilarating and magical experience! It was an adventure for everyone, even the youngest in our group (age nine), and definitely a highlight of our trip to Mexico. To top it all off, we ended the day at a fantastic local Mexican restaurant, where I had some of the best fish tacos of my life, paired with an amazing margarita. Alondra was not just an excellent guide but also a wonderful person—warm, friendly, and engaging. By the end of the day, she felt like a friend, and we were sad to say goodbye. If you’re looking for an adventure that’s fun for the whole family and truly unforgettable, this tour is a must!
