We had a delightful day from start to finish with Keiji. While the tour was focused on the food of Osaka, Keiji was able to go far beyond the scope of cuisine. He joined us in fascinating conversations about Japanese culture, explaining some of the differences between the people and the culture in Tokyo vs Osaka. We are a curious group of 4 with many questions & observations. Keiji was able to answer every one of them in an interesting way. Keiji’s english is impeccable making it very easy to communicate. He is warm hearted and lovely to be with. I highly recommend him as a guide.

We had a great day with our tour guide Yuichi. As a true Osaka local, he was able to take us around to great spots that we would have never been able to find on our own and teach us about the city along the way. He had a genuine interest in sharing his native city with us beyond and seemed to truly enjoyed interacting with his visitors. For us, he was willing to go the extra mile to help us navigate our surroundings and make sure we didn’t miss anything.

We loved the Umami Town tour with Yoko. Our small group visited food stands and shops -- from a fish monger to a sesame specialist, a matcha tea maker, a pastry shop, and more. Yoko is a scholar of umami, and miso in particular, and framed our touring (and eating) around a perfect introduction to Osaka's historic importance as the center of umami culture (spoiler: it has a lot to do with shipping seaweed). We were charmed, well-fed, and came away with a much deeper understanding of Japanese cuisine.

Our third food tour with Culinary Backstreets ( Tokyo, Marseille) - in Osaka and it did not disappoint! Yoko was an inspirational guide with her passion for not just the food of Osaka but also local culture and traditions. Generous tastings and an insight into ‘umami’ !

This tour was such an amazing experience. Our guide Yuka shared so much about Osaka history and food history, introduced us to vendors that had been operating for decades, and included many special surprises throughout the tour. If you come to Osaka, this is a must do.

Miyo shared her knowledge with us in a very thoughtful and well considered way. It was great to have the science behind umami explained as a precursor to the walk. She also managed the time we had well by planning the stops well thus introducing us to as many different food types as possible. Milo’s command of English was excellent which made it so easy to understand her and enabled us to discuss different aspects of Japanese culture.
