Miyo shared her knowledge with us in a very thoughtful and well considered way. It was great to have the science behind umami explained as a precursor to the walk. She also managed the time we had well by planning the stops well thus introducing us to as many different food types as possible. Milo’s command of English was excellent which made it so easy to understand her and enabled us to discuss different aspects of Japanese culture.

First off, I have to say I am a pretty tough customer since I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to over 100 countries. I’d love exploring a country through their cuisine so I have taken close to 50 different culinary walks. Culinary Backstreets has always been one of my favorites, but my recent walk with Yuka absolutely blew me away. It turned out that I was the only customer that day, so I was wondering if I would get an edited version. Instead Yuka went overboard to make sure that I had an incredible experience. She is extremely knowledgeable (probably because she is also a talented chef) super fun, enthusiastic, and the hours flew by. The food choices she selected for me, were all delicious, and greatly expanded my knowledge of Japanese cuisine. The stories she told me kept me entertained the whole afternoon. Plus, when we would go to small mom and pop eateries, the owner’s eyes lit up when they saw her coming so I’m not the only one who thought she was doing a tremendous job. If you are remotely, a foodie, this is one tour, you simply cannot miss!

We had the best time on our Umami Town tour with Miyo! The tour was incredibly well planned to give us all a taste of the amazing variety and excellence of the Osaka food scene. Miyo is deeply knowledgeable about Osaka's history and its incredible food. She treated us to the best of the best: from cheesecake she stood in line to get us the day before, to getting us into the best gyoza place before it opened (thank you, Gyoza Osaka tei!!!! So delicious!). Miyo was knowledgeable, friendly, curious, and fun. And the small group size also made for a lovely afternoon that felt personally tailored to each of us.

It was an incredible experience! Our guide Myiako took us to the heart of Japanese gastronomic tradition and guided us through its evolution to the present day. I became aware of the need to awaken my taste buds to reflect umami. I loved it and highly recommend this tour!

Incredible tour! Our guide was amazing and showed us all around the tastiest parts of Osaka. Especially in the markets we would have struggled to find the gems (so many options!) and she took us right to super tasty experiences. She was so nice and had great ideas about what to do in Osaka and other parts of Japan, beyond the tour. 10/10 highly recommend!

Such a fun and interesting day - we ate our way through umami town Osaka and tried all kinds of great food with Yoko our excellent guide. This is my third Culinary Backstreet experience and they never disappoint in providing a real insider tour of the city and food scene.
