Verde Canyon Railroad

For 3.5-hours, enjoy comfort and style, exceptional amenities and outstanding service in vintage rail cars on a century-old route. Wind your way through a red rock paradise, with tracks that hug the curves of the Verde River. Every season offers a different reason to ride! Astonishing views of a wild and vibrant frontier, historic trestles, bridges and a 7000-foot tunnel are just a few of the highlights tucked into unusual rock formations, red rock pinnacles and towering crimson cliffs. Majestic bald eagles and hawks float effortlessly on the breeze above Javelina, wild burros, jackrabbits and many other Canyon creatures, peacefully coexisting with this heritage railroad for more than 100 years.

At the depot, be sure to visit the John Bell Museum, home to the railroad's history and artifacts from its early days, as well as a wealth of information on Clarkdale, Jerome and the Yavapai-Apache Nation.

5.00This was a good way to see nature’s bounty without the dusty jeep ride, which is fun but but would not have been great with elderly parents. This experience was seamless, parking easy at the train depot, lots of shade and a bar and cafe while you wait. Food is very fresh and packaged so you can take on train or eat while waiting. When you get on, there is water, a wee champagne bottle and a nice tray of cheese crackers fruit and a decadent brownie, we could have skipped lunch, actually. Bar on each car, Megan was our attentive bartender. When the train gets going, it’s a slow roll through untouched canyon, can stay inside the a/c car or sit outside where a staffer tells stories about what you are seeing g. Unfortunately while there is a narration inside through the speakers, we couldn’t hear it. Megan did a good job of filling in when she wasn’t mixing drinks. One tip, if mobility is an issue, let the, know when you book, because they train is 1/4 mile long and you could be walking a bit far to your car. A great way to spend a su dat afternoon.

5.00Prepare for an amazing adventure that assaults your senses in every way. Be certain to arrive early to browse through the well-stocked and thoughtfully selected items in the gift shop. You can make your purchases then or complete them when your train returns at the end of the tour. Food is available for purchase or to order and pick up if it is part of your excursion. There is room to eat outside as you wait for your boarding call. Bathrooms are available nearby. Guests are called to board their train car and you may then find your assigned seat. There are very small restrooms available on each car. You will also find a well stocked beverage area with attendant on your train car. The tour begins and you are welcomed with some facts about your journey and introductions are made of the staff members who will accompany you. You are invited to move about your car or walk out to the open air observation car that is adjacent to your assigned ride. We partook in a very generous charcuterie sampling and staff engaged all in a champagne toast. I met many fine and interesting people while aboard. The atmosphere lends easily to conversations throughout. Diverse scenes present themselves and are pointed out by staff with plenty of time to ready your cameras. You may catch those images from your seat or go out to the observation car where you don’t need to stay in one place or even view from just one side of the train. There you will find seating or you may stand at the rail. I met guests from a variety of states and even other countries. Many of them were first time visitors to the area and some returning to enjoy the desert views once again. I think most were surprised by the variety of sights in the reasonably short distance the train passes through. You will be entertained at various times by staff as they move throughout your car while explaining local history or preparing you for upcoming sights or areas to watch for certain types of wildlife. Halfway through the journey the train stops while it is prepared for the return journey along the same set of rails. Your trip will end too soon but you will have time to say your good byes to your new friends and gather your belongings for disembarkation from the train. You will have time to make any final purchases from the gift shop before you make your way back to your vehicle. Like any trip, you will get out of it what you put into it. I found every staff person to be welcoming and engaging. Every aspect of the tour was well thought out and I enjoyed every minute of it!

5.00Seating ion the train is reserved so you don’t have to fight other travelers for a seat . The included box lunch allows you to choose among several option including a fresh salad, chicken wrap, chicken fingers, hamburger and others. Staff members were very courteous and professional. Train comfortable and well maintained. Every passenger has access to an air conditioned car as well as an outdoor car for better viewing of the landscape. The trip was fun and very informative. The railroad has been doing this for 25 years, and it’s clear they know what they’re doing. Do not miss this opportunity!
