Join Auckland & Beyond Tours for an unforgettable Waitomo Glowworm Caves experience! New Zealand’s unique “Arachnocampa Luminosa” glowworms light up the Waitomo Grotto, creating a mesmerizing scene. We’ll start by picking you up from Auckland CBD, followed by a scenic 2.5-hour drive through South Auckland and the Waikato region, with stops for photos along the way.

Upon arrival, you’ll have 30 minutes to browse the Gift Shop or enjoy refreshments at the Waitomo Homestead. Then, embark on a one-hour guided tour through the Glowworm Cave, where your guide will share the cave’s history and details about the fascinating glowworms and rock formations.

Finish your tour with a serene boat ride along the Waitomo River, silently marveling at the glowworms’ ethereal light. After your Glowworm experience, we’ll return to Auckland via scenic roads.

  • Nice trip with great guide Adil

We had a wonderful day with our guide Adil. He picked us up at our Park Hyatt hotel and returned us there. He was very prompt. Adil is very personable and knowledgeable man. The glow worms were fascinating altho the boat trip is really short. You can take a pic at the end but the pics aren't very good. They have fake pics with green screen you can buy. Adil narrated on the way there and even stopped to show us a surprise. We were only 4 in the comfortable van. It's a 2.5 hour drive but Adil made it very pleasant.

Maybe my expectations were too high. 6 hour round trip for a 40 minute tour. Weren’t allowed to take pictures in the cave even w/o flash. Glow worms were interesting. Tour guide in the caves was monotone but understandable. Not sure I would make that trip again with what I know now. Our driver kept us entertained with his knowledge of history of New Zealand.

  • A huge HASSLE! AVOID

Have used Viator in Spain & Portugal with good experiences, but this was appalling! Guaranteed 24-hr cancellation was reneged on with excuse that Auckland & Beyond was used for the tour & they would not refund. NO excuse as Viator offers the cancellation policy. Further, after we cancelled & were trying to resolve refund issue, we kept getting calls, emails, texts, etc to “verify” our tour. To add to that hassle, we got a 6 AM call at the hotel asking where we were (!) after we had explained that the tour was cancelled & acknowledged as such by Viator.

  • Third group

Hobbiton was beautiful and the guides were excellent. The only disappointing thing was that I thought we would be the first group into Hobbiton. I think we were the third, so still early, but it was still busy ahead and behind us. The drive was smooth and relaxing.

  • This involves a long 2 hour bus ride...

This involves a long 2 hour bus ride each way. But if you find the New Zealand countryside interesting as I do, then that is just a bonus. My wife is not a Hobbit fan, has not seen the movies, and still enjoyed the day - despite the 5:35 AM pickup. And if you enjoyed the movies, you will love the site. Our site guide was part of the reconstruction crew, and had lots of personal stories about the cast and Jackson, and about the creation of the current site and some filming tricks. Have the dark ale at the Green Dragon if you like beer. Some in our group complained that the group was too large, and they had trouble hearing the guide. The paths are narrow, and this could be an issue, but there are collection areas where the guides stop, so if you keep up it should be OK. Overall, this was one of the highlights of our trip.
