Join authorised, local guides for an authentic, small-group experience around Bergen - both the city and off-the-beaten path.
The first half of our tour focuses on Bergen's history. We wander the fortress complex, covering Bergen’s medieval history and short period as Norway's capital. After this crash course in Norwegian history, we make our way to Bryggen, Bergen’s UNESCO Site. Here, you learn about 1,000 years of trade history and the reason for Bergen’s founding and growth.
The second half of our tour is about life in Bergen. We leave the ‘touristy’ part behind and wander into the neighbourhood surrounding Bryggen. As you explore Bergen’s best kept secret, you’ll learn about everyday life. The tour ends by passing by our top picks for restaurants.
We consider this a moderate walk with stairs. The walk is approximately 3km (2 miles).
Once you book, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details — including where to meet, what to wear, and our contact info.

The Rosenkrantz Tower - Bymuseet I Bergen
Our tour begins by visiting the Bergen Fortress. When Bergen was the capital, this is where the palace was located. It's the best spot to start a walking tour!
Haakon's Hall - Bymuseet i Bergen
We pass by Håkon's Hall, the major part of the medieval palace still standing today. Here you learn about Bergen's time as an independent country and we also explain Norway's unions with Denmark and Sweden. Please note that we do not enter Håkons Hall (it is a museum that costs money). On rare occasions, the fortress is closed due to a private event.

Maria was knowledgeable and very friendly. Passionate about Bergen, she explained past and present animatedly. The walk was comfortable with some uphills which is the nature of Bergen. It was so good to see the residential areas as well as Bryggen and the town.

Our guide Maria was friendly, knowledgeable and considerate. It was a real pleasure to spend two hours with a small group of fellow travellers hearing about the history of Bergen. Just the right level of information and pace throughout the tour. We appreciated the restaurant and cafe recommendations which we immediately took advantage of. Thank you Maria!

Janine was fantastic. As fellow Aussies we loved her take and personal touch. Janine was very personable, friendly and a fountain of information on all the areas we visited. She also gave us tips on local eating places. We absolutely loved the tour and would definitely recommend to other tourists.

Had a great walking tour with Janine today, she was very pleasant and very informative about Bergen past and present. It rained for most if not all the walk but Janine made walk really worthwhile and we were very glad we did it. Highly recommend

Did this tour on Sunday morning with Erik who was very friendly and made the tour fun and very interesting. As there’s very little open on Sunday in January it was a very enjoyable way to spend the morning.

Learned a lot about the history of Bryggen and Norway in general, as well as historic people from the area. Our guide also provided advice on what to see based on our interests. We always take a walking Viatour when we visit a city for the first time. Our guide, Jeff, did not disappoint.
