Windsor Castle
The town of Windsor is best known for its historical links to the British royal family, and it is suitably steeped in pageantry and history. Towering over the rest of the town is Windsor Castle, the ancestral home of the English and later British monarchy, and largest inhabited castle in the world. It has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years and is today one of the official residences of His Majesty The King. Occupying over 10.5 hectares, the Castle offers a varied day out for visitors, including a visit to the magnificent State Apartments and St George's Chapel. The Castle's State Apartments are furnished with some of the finest works from the Royal Collection, reflecting the changing tastes of the Castle's royal occupants, particularly those of Charles II and George IV. Many of the works of art are still in the historic settings for which they were first collected or commissioned by the kings and queens who have lived at Windsor.

This trip should not go to Windsor castle on days when it is closed. All we saw was a few metres of the outside. I thought we could go into the grounds if not the building. The guide, Godfrey was useless. His information was garbled and inaccurate. He spoke really fast then dragged out the last sentence in a silly voice. He spoke with vitriol about members of the royal family he didn’t like and didn’t mention anything positive about any others. He spent more time directing us to shops where he knew the owners. He said it was too far to walk to Christchurch in Oxford but my granddaughter and I did it in 5 minutes. We did not get enough time in Oxford or Stonehenge so Windsor castle was unnecessary. It is too much driving for one trip.

Our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. She gave clear directions before every stop and allowed time for independent wandering, which made it easy and enjoyable to try local snacks.
