  This was better than going to the theatre! Being so close up with the actors and being integrated into the performance was so much fun. They get you involved from the start and we had a great laugh.

  My husband and I had booked in the dungeons experience to do with my parents during their visit from the US. Unfortunately there was some flooding in the building when we arrived so we were unable to do the full experience that day, but the employees were extremely apologetic and offered several alternatives including a full refund, rebooking for a different day, or taking part in their walking tour around York (which I didn't even know they did). We decided to do the walking tour, I was a bit skeptical, but honestly it was amazing. The two cast members who showed us around a few of York's historical landmarks were HILARIOUS and knowledgeable. The 4 of us laughed so much and learned a lot about the history. 10/10 cannot recommend enough!

  So here is the thing. The museum was closed on Saturday because of a water problem with the club next door. So we were initially disappointed as we came to York especially for this and drove over three hours from Worcester (York sort out the traffic problem!) and arrived in the afternoon. The five stars are for the fantastic staff at the entrance who explained the situation and offered us refunds without any hesitation. Which we know some places are hesitant on refunds! I didn’t get his name but it was the manager who was on the front desk all day (glasses and beard). We spoke to him and bless him you could tell he was exhausted talking to everyone but he was still kind under the circumstances. He offered us a free outdoor tour with my daughter getting a free book and discounts to other York museums so we didn’t leave disappointed. We spoke to the manager who was sad that the place was closed and tried to get it open that morning. He had great history knowledge about Dick Turpin’s hanging and the connection with the Blue Boar pub opposite. If his managers read this then the guy at the front desk and his team are clearly passionate about the museum and deserves to be recognised for their efforts that day. I couldn’t imagine facing angry guests! We will be back sometime in the autumn when you are open again.

  Unfortunately couldn't get in due to flooding. But the staff were very helpful and sorted a refund process to be started as was booked through here so hopefully Tripadvisor can be just as good with refund.

  ​The Vibe: 5/5 The second you walk in, the atmosphere hits you. It’s dark, unsettling, and actually smells like pissy alleyways and burning wood. The lighting isn't just there to look cool; it genuinely builds the suspense until you’re looking over your shoulder. ​The Cast: 10/10 The actors are the heart of this place. The guy playing the Doctor was on another level—he popped up in a few different roles and his range was incredible. The humor is sharp, but they know when to dial up the dread. ​The Highlights: ​The Witch Section: This was the standout for me. The build-up is genuinely scary, and the way they play with the lights going on and off had everyone on edge. ​The Courtroom: Apparently, the worst crime you can commit in 1500s York is being from Derby. I got hauled up on trial for it, which was hilarious and a great way to get the crowd involved. ​The Pacing: Perfect. It never felt rushed, but there’s zero dead air. Because it’s so immersive, you never really lose the "illusion." ​The Verdict: 5/5 I’d recommend this to anyone, but with one caveat: you have to play along. If you’re going to be a stooge and stand there like a statue, you’re going to ruin the vibe for everyone else. Go in, get involved, and enjoy the chaos.
