Just east of Asheville is the spectacular Catawba Falls, situated at the headwaters of the Catawba River. This hike starts on a wide, well-graded trail along the Catawba River to Lower Catawba Falls. You'll climb the observation tower (580 stairs in total!) to see a spectacular east-facing view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Then continue to Upper Catawba Falls, which was off limits to hikers until 2024. This hike is about 3.5 miles round trip, overall moderate (but not technical). It's a great way to see both sweeping mountain views and waterfalls... it's a beautiful hike year round!

I am a member of Quad-City Women's Outdoor Club. We spent 5 nights and 6 days exploring Ashville, NC with the Blue Ridge Mountain Outfitters. The Catawba Falls was only one of the hikes we went on. We did the Sunset Hike and a day hike on the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our outfitters, Mel and Traci thought of everything! We did glamping at Lake Powhatan Campground, we not only hiked but kayaked down the French Broad, toured the Biltmore Mansion and dined at the Suerra Nevada Brewing Company. They also hired Natty, a wonderful chef, to fix our meals when back at camp. Overall, one of the best trips our club has been on. It was a very enjoyable and memorable trip thanks to Blue Ridge Mountain Outfitters. I highly recommend them!
