Step into the living history of Guwahati on a guided heritage walk through its oldest neighbourhoods, where ancient legends, medieval remnants, and colonial-era architecture still shape the city’s character.

This curated experience takes you through atmospheric lanes, riverside ghats, and lesser-known heritage corners that most visitors miss. You’ll hear the story of Pragjyotishpur, the historic capital of the Kamarupa kingdom, and see how Guwahati evolved over centuries; through dynasties, trade, and faith. Along the route, we highlight key architectural details, local narratives, and “hidden spots” that reveal the soul of old Guwahati.

Expect plenty of photo opportunities, and a well-paced walk that feels immersive rather than rushed. Perfect for curious travellers, culture lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to understand Guwahati beyond the surface.

Guwahati

Explore Guwahati beyond the usual landmarks on a guided heritage walk through the city’s oldest neighbourhoods. This curated walk traces Guwahati’s story from ancient Pragjyotishpur, the historic seat of the Kamarupa kingdom and into the post colonial-era cityscape. Along the way we stop at historical points, including hidden lanes, forgotten corners, riverside ghats, old institutions, and striking examples of indigenous architecture. Your guide will decode the history behind what you see; temple traditions, urban evolution, architectural details, and the people and events that shaped “old Guwahati.” A relaxed, story-driven walk ideal for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, photographers, and travellers who want a deeper, local understanding of the city.

  • A uniquely invigorating and memorable walk

The heritage walk from Uzan Bazar to the waterfront near Fancy Bazar, through Jor Pukkhuri and Pan Bazar, was a uniquely enriching experience. I didn't grow up in Guwahati but I have visited at least once a year since I was a baby. My parents and in-laws grew up in the city, in the vicinity of the heritage walk's route. Yet, I did not know many an interesting factoid about these old neighborhoods. They constitute Guwahati's urban treasures and impart a deep sense of place, quite overwhelming when one realizes the historicity of these spaces. Invigorating and pleasant, these heritage walks are a new and unique attraction for visitors and residents alike -- a beautifu way to know a city better. Kudos to the founders and guides for thinking of and providing this valuable service. I joined the walk when it was still being piloted. Hence, it was free. But I absolutely wouldn't mind paying a reasonable sum to support the associated organizational and service costs. Wishing the walks much success. I highly recommend participating in one to discover wondrous facets of our built environment. I look forward to joining one again.

Guided walk led by experts that offer comprehensive understanding of the city's past right from the ancient Kamrupa kingdom up to colonial period. An easy walking trail which goes through old neighbourhoods, historic temples and colonial heritage sites with stops at landmark eateries. Slow paced with sufficient time for photography and well explained at each site. Looking forward to the heritage Food Walk Tour next time.

  • An enriching heritage walk that changed how I see my city Guwahati

I recently had the opportunity to be part of one of the first heritage walks curated by Kamakhya Walks, and it turned out to be a truly beautiful and insightful experience. What made this walk special was how seamlessly it brought together Guwahati’s medieval roots, colonial (British-era) influences, modern history, and local home-grown stories all while walking through spaces we often pass by without a second thought. The experience gently reminds you that history isn’t locked inside museums; it lives in streets, structures, neighbourhoods, and everyday corners of the city. I would highly recommend this heritage walk to locals and visitors alike especially anyone who wants to connect more deeply with Guwahati beyond its surface. It’s a wonderful initiative by Prasenjit and I’m excited to see more such experiences from Kamakhya Walks.

Excellent experience. Great heritage walk, amazing storytelling and probably the only walk in Guwahati where one can engage with the Hidden spots of Guwahati. Highly recommended.
