The Dehradun Buddhist Monastery offers a deeply moving glimpse into Buddhist culture and spirituality. It is a haven of peace—an ideal place for meditation and quiet reflection. A sense of joy radiates from every colourful structure, where a towering Buddha watches over visitors with a compassionate, serene smile. The monastery is home to the World Peace Stupa, also known as the Stupa of Buddha’s Descent from Devaloka. Both the stupa and its surrounding shrines beautifully reflect authentic Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and artistry. The monastery itself spans five floors, housing statues of Lord Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava. The first three floors are adorned with ornate golden wall paintings, while the fourth-floor open platform offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Dehradun valley—an experience that truly captures the place’s magnificence. The lush greenery surrounding the monastery, along with the well-maintained gardens near the bookstore stocked with Tibetan literature, adds to its scenic charm. Founded by Khochhen Rinpoche, who was exiled during the Communist regime in China, the monastery was established to preserve and promote the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. The also includes primary and secondary schools, where young monks begin their spiritual education at an early age. Nearby, well-stocked shops offer Tibetan prayer wheels and souvenirs, including wall hangings inscribed with the mantra “Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ” (“praise to the jewel in the lotus”). There are also several cafés and restaurants serving delicious Tibetan delicacies, with momos being a particular highlight.
