Lodz is the third largest city in Poland that hundred years ago used to be the center of the polish industry. For that reason Lodz used to be called the Promised Land or the polish Manchester. However, the greatest strength of this city comes from its history.
During World War II, the Nazi Germans annexed Lodz to the Reich and changed its name to Litzmannstadt. Shortly after that, they built a ghetto and locked over 200.000 Polish Jews up inside it. Only few people survived. The district has survived though, and today it commemorates those tragic events.
Lodz is the city of contrasts. In the middle of the maze of factories and workshops the picturesque center is hidden. It’s the most beautiful part of the city. There are plenty of splendid, pre-war buildings with rich decorated facades. They represent a unique style that you will find neither in Warsaw nor in Krakow. It takes only one hour and a half to get to Lodz from Warsaw and it’s really worth doing it.

5.00We had a wonderful day trip from Warsaw to Lodz with Marcin. He briefed us in detail on our way to Lodz and showed us around the key sightseeings. A great choice of place for lunch too. Nothing beats the local knowledge!

5.00This one-day private tour of Lodz (from Warsaw) is highly recommended. Martin is an excellent and highly knowledgeable and professional tour guide, who met us promptly at our hotel. During the drive to Lodz (a little under 2 hours) Martin gave us a detailed insight into the city of Lodz. He also recounted the horrendous experience of the Jews of the city’s ghetto and their eventual fate. It is a very sensitive story and he handled it very well. His English language skills are excellent, and he is a good communicator. He was happy to answer any questions and gave us a great deal of information about Lodz, Warsaw and Poland in general. The tour was very interesting and included all of the important locations specified in the itinerary concerning the Lodz Jewish ghetto and its’ fate. Also, we appreciated the visit to the former Poznanski factory now converted to a shopping mall where we had a traditional Polish lunch. The final part of the visit was to the centre of Lodz and showed the links of Lodz to the movie and entertainment industries, even having its’ own Walk of Fame with stars for Roman Polanski and many other famous Poles in entertainment.

Trip to Lodz with Jewish History during the Holocaust

5.00While small, Lodz has a first class interactive museum highlighting the Jewish ghetto during the Holocaust. In addition, the complex that once housed the textile mill that enabled the ghetto residents to remain valuable to the Nazis is now a huge outdoor mall. That complex and the Poznanski Palace was incredible. My guide Martin was so knowledgeable about Lodz - at the same time sensitive and empathetic to the plight of the Jews and the terrible circumstance of their plight. Martin was a wonderful guide and I enjoyed my day with him, considering the sad subject matter.
