Plateia Syntagmatos
We start our walking tour at Syntagma Square ("Constitution Square"), which is the central square of Athens. The square is named after the Constitution that Otto, the first King of Greece, was obliged to grant after a popular and military uprising on September 3, 1843. It is located in front of the 19th-century Old Royal Palace, housing the Greek Parliament since 1934. Highlight: Gleaming with white marble and beautiful statues, the square is a magnet for people, locals and tourists.
Monument to the Unknown Soldier
We cross the street towards the Parliament to see the Changing of the Guards: The changing of the guards takes place every hour by the military unit whose members, Evzones, stand proudly in perfect stillness in front of the Parliament. The Evzones are a special unit of the Hellenic Army, also known as Tsoliades, whose role is to guard the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, a war memorial located in front of the Parliament, dedicated to Greek soldiers killed during wars.
